Peter Byrne Dies at 74: Naked Eyes Singer Behind Two Enduring ’80s Hits

Peter Byrne, the singer and songwriter whose voice defined the British new wave group Naked Eyes, died on September 14 after a brief illness. He was 74, according to Deadline.

The Songs That Made Naked Eyes Famous

Byrne formed Naked Eyes with keyboardist Rob Fisher in the early 1980s. Their electronic version of “Always Something There to Remind Me” became a major hit in the United States. They followed it with “Promises, Promises,” another song that helped establish the duo’s place in the decade’s pop music.

Before Naked Eyes, Byrne and Fisher played together in Neon, whose members also included future Tears for Fears musicians Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Naked Eyes released Burning Bridges and Fuel for the Fire during its original run.

Music After the Duo’s First Run

Following Fisher’s death in 1999, Byrne continued to record and perform. He later brought Naked Eyes back to the stage, playing the songs that had introduced the duo to audiences decades earlier. Naked Eyes released Disguise the Limit in 2021.

Byrne’s recordings with Fisher remain a lasting part of the 1980s pop soundtrack.
