I left my 6-year-old son at the entrance of a supermarket with the bags from a restaurant while I quickly ran inside to grab a few things. We had just picked up takeout, and I thought it would only take a couple of minutes. I told him to stay right where he was, keep an eye on the bags, and wait for me. He nodded confidently, and I headed to the checkout, never imagining how fast everything was about to go wrong.
I’m standing in line at the checkout when I suddenly hear him shouting my name at the top of his lungs. His voice was filled with panic as he yelled that some woman had taken the bags. My heart dropped. I abandoned my place in line and sprinted outside, expecting to see someone running off. Instead, the woman was calmly walking away as if she had every right to be carrying our dinner, never once looking over her shoulder.
After I caught up with her, I demanded to know why she had taken the bags. She looked me straight in the eye without the slightest hesitation and seriously insisted they were hers. She acted so confident that, for a brief second, I almost questioned myself. But I knew exactly what our order looked like, and my son was standing only a few feet away, frightened and pointing directly at her. Without arguing any further, I grabbed the bags from her hands and walked away before the situation could escalate. She muttered something under her breath but made no attempt to stop me. My son hugged me tightly, still shaken, and I realized how easily someone can take advantage of a child who trusts that adults will do the right thing. It was a simple meal, but the experience was a reminder that it only takes a moment for an ordinary day to turn into something you never forget.
