Jo Gardiner, the physiotherapist and television personality who appeared alongside her son Sam Gardiner in the BBC adventure series Race Across the World, has died at the age of 61 following a prolonged battle with cancer.
Her death comes a little more than a year after Sam died from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was only 24.
Jo’s family confirmed that she died after what they described as a “long and courageous battle with cancer.” She is survived by her son Charlie.

Sam died in May 2025 after his Volkswagen Golf left the A34 near Manchester and overturned. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died three days after the accident.
At the time, Sam was working as a landscape gardener on an isolated estate on Scotland’s west coast. He had returned to the Manchester area for a family gathering when the accident occurred.
