Hollywood legend Ann Blyth, the Oscar-nominated actress best known for her unforgettable performance as the manipulative Veda Pierce in the 1945 classic Mildred Pierce, has died at the age of 98.

Blyth died of natural causes at her home in Rancho Santa Fe, California, on June 24, according to her family. She was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing.

Born on August 16, 1928, in Mount Kisco, New York, Blyth began performing as a child before making her Broadway debut. She transitioned to Hollywood in the mid-1940s, quickly establishing herself as one of the era’s brightest young talents.

Her breakthrough came at just 16 years old when she portrayed the scheming and ruthless Veda Pierce opposite Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce. The performance earned Blyth an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and remains one of the most memorable villainous roles in classic cinema.

Beyond Mildred Pierce, Blyth showcased her versatility in both dramas and musicals, starring in films such as Brute Force, Killer McCoy, Top o’ the Morning, The Great Caruso, The Student Prince, Rose Marie, and The Helen Morgan Story. Trained as a lyric soprano, she was equally admired for her singing talent and appeared alongside stars including Mario Lanza, Gregory Peck, Bing Crosby, Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster, and Paul Newman.
