Little Johnny was sitting in class when the teacher announced that they were going to try something different to help everyone get to know each other a little better and practice their spelling skills at the same time. The children immediately became curious as the teacher smiled and explained the activity.
“I want each of you to stand up, tell us your father’s occupation, spell it correctly, and then share one thing he would give us all if he were here today,” she said.
The students whispered excitedly among themselves, wondering what their classmates’ fathers did for a living and what surprises they might bring.
The first student raised her hand eagerly. “Marcy,” the teacher said. “You may go first.”
Marcy stood proudly in front of the class and said, “My father is a banker. B-A-N-K-E-R. And if he was here today, he would give us all a shiny new penny.”
The teacher smiled and nodded. “Very nice, Marcy. That was excellent. Who would like to go next?”
Kevin quickly raised his hand and stood up. “My father is a baker. B-A-K-E-R. And if he was here today, he would give us all a freshly baked cookie.”
“Very good, Kevin,” the teacher replied. “That sounds delicious.”
The class laughed happily as Kevin returned to his seat, and another student, Jeff, was called next.
Jeff walked to the front of the room and confidently announced, “My father is an accountant. A-K… no, wait… A-C-K… no…”
The classroom became quiet as Jeff frowned, trying harder to remember the spelling. He looked at the board, then at the teacher, but the word seemed to have completely disappeared from his mind.
Before he could attempt another guess, the teacher gently stopped him.
“That’s all right, Jeff,” she said. “Why don’t you sit back down and think about it for a while? When you believe you know how to spell it, you can stand up and try again.”
Jeff returned to his seat, still concentrating intensely, while the other students waited for their turn.
Then Little Johnny raised his hand as high as he could, practically bouncing in his chair, hoping the teacher would call on him. The teacher noticed his excitement and smiled.
“All right, Johnny. You may go next.”
Little Johnny proudly walked to the front of the class and announced, “My father is a bookie.”
The students looked confused, and the teacher raised an eyebrow.
“Can you spell that for us, Johnny?” she asked.
Johnny confidently replied, “B-O-O-K-I-E.”
The teacher nodded, waiting for the final part of the assignment.
“And if your father was here today,” she asked, “what would he give us all?”
Johnny grinned mischievously and said, “He would give us all 20:1 odds that Jeff will never be able to spell ‘accountant.’”
The entire classroom burst into laughter, while Jeff buried his face in embarrassment. Even the teacher struggled to keep a straight face as she shook her head at Little Johnny’s clever answer.
Later that week, during Sunday school, the teacher announced a new lesson about kindness and generosity.
“Now, Little Johnny,” she said, “I want you to memorize today’s motto: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
Little Johnny immediately raised his hand.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said proudly, “but I already know it. My father says he has always used that as his motto in his business.”
The teacher smiled warmly, impressed by what she assumed was a lesson in generosity.
“Oh, how noble of him!” she said. “And what is your father’s business?”
Little Johnny stood there proudly for a moment, then answered with complete confidence:
“He’s a boxer.”
The room fell silent for a second as everyone tried to understand what Johnny meant. Then the teacher realized the joke, and the children erupted into laughter once again, proving that Little Johnny always had a surprising answer ready when nobody expected it.
