“This house is yours,” I said. “I used the money. I’ll be attending an Ivy League university here in the city, and I wanted you nearby. You’ll have this home, and we’ll never be apart. After I finish my studies, we can go back to our old house together, or… stay here. Whatever you want.”

Tears filled her eyes as the weight of my words sank in. “You… you did all this for me?”

“Yes,” I said, placing the keys in her trembling hands. “Because you never left me when everyone thought you would. You stayed. Now it’s my turn to give you something permanent.”

She broke down, pulling me into her arms, both of us crying openly in the driveway.
