British comedian and actor Tony Slattery, best known for his role on the improv show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, has passed away at the age of 65.
Slattery’s family confirmed he died on Tuesday morning after suffering a heart attack on Sunday evening.
In a statement, his longtime partner Mark Michael Hutchinson said, “It is with great sadness we must announce that actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, passed away this morning following a heart attack on Sunday night.”
Tributes poured in across social media from fellow comedians and friends who admired Slattery’s humor and kind spirit.
Stephen Fry shared his grief on Instagram, writing, “So very sad to have lost the wonderful Tony Slattery, just about the gentlest, sweetest soul I ever knew. Not to mention a screamingly funny and deeply talented wit and clown.”
Fry, 67, reflected on Slattery’s struggles, adding, “A cruel irony that fate should snatch him from us just as he had really begun to emerge from his lifelong battle with so many dark demons. It was lovely to see him rediscover joy over the past year with live shows and a podcast series. Love and condolences to Mark, his devoted partner of nearly 40 years.”
Josie Lawrence, Slattery’s co-star from Whose Line Is It Anyway?, took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “So many memories of laughing together. Being silly, being creative. He was talented, kind, funny, and beautiful. Sending love to Mark. Rest peacefully now, Tony.”
Comedian Helen Lederer also shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, saying, “My best friend in laughter, wit, and love. You were my best man twice, and we adored you. What will we do without you? Tony Slattery, 1959-2025.”
Slattery’s passing marks the loss of a beloved figure in British comedy, remembered not only for his quick wit and charm but for his enduring resilience in the face of personal challenges.
