Country Music’s First Queen, Dies at 85


Pongsri Woranuch, hailed as the First Queen of Luk Thung (Thai country music), has died at the age of 85. She passed away peacefully at her home early Sunday morning after a long battle with a serious lung-related illness—reported as either chronic lung disease or cancer. In recent months, she had been hospitalized multiple times.

A beloved cultural icon, Woranuch helped shape the sound and soul of Thai country music, captivating generations with her voice and emotional depth.

Her son, Jujuk Boonnachoti, broke the news on Facebook with a heartfelt tribute:
“And then Mom got on the last express train and left us. No more cold nights alone, no more pain. Mom, if there’s anything I’ve done wrong in action or in words—please forgive me.”

Her legacy lives on in the melodies that defined an era—and in the hearts of millions who grew up with her voice.
