When Love Turns to Ashes: Caleb’s Descent into Regret
It was supposed to be a pleasant evening. Caleb and Denise had their friends, Sam and Kate, over for dinner.
As they ate, Denise talked excitedly about her recent trip, but Caleb seemed worried and distant.
“It was wonderful, you know,” Denise shared. “I’m planning a surprise for Caleb, but it’s a secret for now.”
Caleb tried to smile but looked troubled. When it was his turn to talk, he lowered his voice.
“I’ve been having a hard time,” he confessed. “I lost my job unexpectedly, and our bills are piling up.”
Sam and Kate exchanged worried glances. They knew Caleb to be hardworking and felt awful for him.
“That sounds really tough, Caleb,” Sam said. “Can we help in any way?”
“Yes, please let us know,” Kate added gently. “We’re here for both of you.”
Caleb sighed. “Thanks, but I’m looking for a job. It’s just… things have been tough.”
“Honey,” Denise said softly. “It’ll get better. Don’t let this bog you down. We need to stay positive and work through this together.”
But Caleb bristled. Her optimism only irritated him. “You’re always pretending everything is fine!” he snapped.
The mood turned tense. Denise tried to change the subject back to her trip, but Caleb cut her off, raising his voice.
“Stop, Denise! Stop acting like everything’s fine. We have big problems! And why have you been spending so much lately? What was that trip really about?”
“Hey, bud,” Sam intervened cautiously, “maybe this isn’t the best time.”
“Yeah, let’s just enjoy the evening,” Kate added, though her smile was forced.
But the evening was already ruined. Sam and Kate left early, leaving behind a heavy silence.
When they were alone, Caleb exploded. “You don’t support me. You’re spending too much. And you used to care about yourself, but now—”
Denise’s eyes widened. “What do you mean by that?”
“You’ve let yourself go!” he growled. “Didn’t you see Kate? She’s so fit, so healthy. And you—”
Tears welled in Denise’s eyes. “You don’t see any of my efforts? How can you say this to me?” She ran to the bedroom in tears, leaving Caleb stewing in pride and anger.
That night, he peered through the curtains and froze. Outside, Denise was stepping into a sleek, black Rolls-Royce. A man in a suit held the door open for her. She looked radiant, almost unrecognizable.
“Who is he?” Caleb muttered bitterly.
Denise ignored his calls. Consumed by jealousy, Caleb searched their bedroom and found letters revealing that Denise had inherited $500,000 from a distant relative. Rage and betrayal boiled inside him.
The next day, determined to win her back—or at least reclaim control—he showed up at her office with flowers. But before Denise could answer him, the man from the Rolls-Royce appeared.
“Is everything alright, Denise?” he asked.
“You!” Caleb snarled. “You’re after her money! Back off!”
Security had to intervene as Caleb shouted accusations. Humiliated, Denise turned to him, her eyes filled with tears.
“You think this is about money?” she asked. “No, Caleb. It’s you who sees me only through money and fear. James is just my coworker. But you—you’ve let pride and bitterness destroy us.”
Caleb stormed off, but his rage only festered. That night, fueled by alcohol and resentment, he drove to her office, poured gasoline over Denise’s rented Rolls-Royce, and set it ablaze. The fire roared into the night—but in the chaos, his jacket caught flame.
By the time sirens pierced the air, Caleb was collapsed on the pavement, burned and broken.
When he woke in the hospital, Denise was there.
“I’m here because I still care,” she whispered. “But you left me no choice.” She explained everything: the car was rented, the man was just a coworker, and the inheritance had been drained—paying for the car he destroyed and his medical treatment.
Then she placed divorce papers on the table. “This is the end, Caleb. I can’t do this anymore.”
Years later, Caleb worked in a café, his scarred hands scrubbing dishes. He had lost everything—his marriage, his home, his pride.
One afternoon, Denise walked in, radiant and smiling, her hand entwined with another man’s. Caleb froze, his chest heavy with regret. Outside, a sleek Rolls-Royce waited for her.
As the door closed behind them, Caleb returned to his sink, the water running over his scarred skin. The café grew quiet, leaving him alone with the one truth he could never escape:
He had lost Denise forever.
