A hardworking woman transforms into an aggressive, impatient boss after receiving her latest promotion at a major fashion retail store. Her sudden rise to power changes her attitude, and before long, her employees begin to dread working under her.
She gets away with her behavior until she insults and fires an elderly janitor, unaware that the decision will turn her entire world upside down.
It had been barely a week since Nia received her big promotion, and she still couldn’t quite believe it.
She was now the general manager of one of the largest outlets belonging to a major fashion retail chain.
Years before receiving the promotion, Nia had filled an entire binder with ideas about how she would transform the store if she ever got the opportunity to lead it.
That morning, the binder sat proudly on her desk as Nia addressed the staff shortly after the shutters were raised and the store opened for business.
“Alright, guys. Is everyone clear about the new protocols we’re going to follow?” she asked.
The employees responded with nods, polite smiles, and a few quiet assurances that they understood.
“I don’t want anyone becoming careless or deviating from my new guidelines. And to make sure everyone takes them seriously, here’s what we’re going to do.”
“Anyone who fails to follow the new rules—whether they’re related to uniforms, customer greetings, display arrangements, or punctuality—will lose their monthly incentive.”
Nia watched the expressions on her employees’ faces turn serious and couldn’t help smiling proudly at what she considered a brilliant management decision.
The staff, however, were anything but impressed. They were utterly shaken by such a drastic announcement.
They feared that even the smallest mistake, whether intentional or accidental, could cost them the extra money they depended on to pay their bills and support their families.
The men and women exchanged uneasy glances, wondering whether anyone should speak up and try to reason with Nia.
Despite the dramatic change in her behavior over the past week, every employee had genuinely been happy about her promotion. They all knew how hard Nia had worked to reach that position over the previous three years. They also knew how passionate she was about the fashion industry.\
And they were proud that someone who had started as an intern on the sales floor had managed to climb so high through dedication and hard work.
Unfortunately, Nia’s newfound authority was beginning to do far more harm than good, both to the store and to the people who had once supported her.
From her very first day in the new position, she had started changing everything. She imposed unrealistically high expectations on employees she knew were already hardworking and responded to even the smallest mistakes with unnecessary anger and impatience.
“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” Nia called out to the staff. “I just had an important meeting with our clients, and I have some good news. We’re planning to increase our sales volume this quarter. So, here’s what we’re going to do… I’ll send out a list of names by this afternoon, and everyone mentioned will have to extend their shifts.”
“If anyone has plans for the weekends, forget about them for now, because we’ll be working weekends too. Is that clear?”
The employees exchanged forced smiles, but their disappointment was impossible to hide.
They all had families, responsibilities, and personal lives. For many of them, weekends were the only opportunity to relax, spend time with loved ones, and recover from exhausting workdays. Unfortunately, they knew there was little point in trying to change Nia’s mind. She had become far too stubborn to listen to anyone.
Every day, Nia introduced another strategy that demanded even more effort from the staff. She began setting increasingly unrealistic targets, pushing employees so hard that the quality of their work was starting to suffer.
Yet she continued convincing herself, and anyone willing to listen, that everything she was doing was ultimately for the company’s benefit.
Then, one day, she sent the loaders home and ordered the salesmen and saleswomen to unload incoming products themselves to reduce labor costs. Nobody was allowed to take a break lasting more than five minutes, and conversations between employees during working hours were strictly prohibited.
As the days passed, employees grew increasingly nervous whenever Nia gathered them for another announcement. She banned the sales staff from sitting down or relaxing during their shifts, insisting that everyone remain on their feet and look busy.
Even sick leave for ordinary colds and flu was discouraged unless an employee’s condition was particularly serious.
Nia also became extremely strict about the attendance system. Employees were expected to punch in and out precisely, and nobody was allowed even a minute beyond the allotted thirty-minute lunch break.
“When customers see us constantly moving around and staying busy, they get a very good impression of our service. We need to show them that we’re always energetic and never tired of helping them. And remember, you must always serve them with a smile.
Am I clear?” she demanded sternly.
Nia was thoroughly pleased with the way she was running the store. She had always dreamed of proving that she was just as talented and capable as anyone else. Sitting in her new office, she leaned back in her chair, took a sip of coffee, and sighed with satisfaction as she reflected on how far she had come.
Reaching such a position had certainly not been easy for her.
She could still remember those difficult days when she had walked from one office to another, submitted applications, attended interviews, and faced rejection after rejection from almost every recruiter.
Nia had been raised by a single mother after her father died in a car accident. She had been an excellent student in college, and after graduation, she tried her hand at several different opportunities. Unfortunately, none of them worked out.
Nia was a dreamer. She wanted to achieve something extraordinary and refused to settle for an ordinary job like the one her mother had worked so hard to maintain.
She was desperate to find the career she had always dreamed of. Then, one day, she came across a pamphlet advertising an internship at a fashion retail outlet.
She immediately attended the interview, where she impressed the recruiters by presenting several creative strategies and business ideas that could help increase profits. They were so impressed with her enthusiasm and potential that they hired her on the spot.
On her first day at work, Nia arrived with a bright smile and made a promise to herself that she would earn a promotion as quickly as possible. Her dedication eventually paid off, and within just six months, she was promoted to general manager of the outlet.
Even now, it felt like a dream whenever she sat in her comfortable rolling chair and looked out at the street she had once wandered along while desperately searching for employment. From her private office on the third floor, she could see the same world that had once seemed so difficult to conquer.
Nia never wanted to return to those desperate days, not even in her thoughts.
She was incredibly proud of the changes she had introduced as she walked around the store and inspected everyone’s work. Every employee appeared occupied, and the entire outlet seemed to be running at full speed. The only problem was that the workload had become far greater than anyone could reasonably handle, yet the staff were still expected to complete everything within the strict deadlines Nia had imposed.
But as time passed, the constant pressure and overwork began taking their toll, and the store’s sales figures started declining drastically.
The numbers were completely opposite to what Nia had planned for the upcoming quarter. Furious and frustrated, she immediately began blaming the employees for the disappointing results.
“Our ratings are dropping! At this rate, we’re going to ruin everything!” Nia shouted at her staff.
“I don’t care what you have to do, but I want every single one of you to work harder. Extend your shifts, reduce your breaks, and do whatever it takes! We cannot allow sales to keep falling. I won’t let that happen!”
Nia was deeply disappointed and couldn’t understand how everything had suddenly gone so wrong despite all the measures she had introduced.
Instead of examining her own decisions, she responded by piling even more work onto the already exhausted employees.
One day, after an especially stressful meeting with a client, Nia entered the trading room and noticed Maya, one of the saleswomen, asleep on the counter.
“How dare you sleep during working hours?” she screamed, startling Maya awake.
“No, ma’am! I was just… I mean, I’m… I’m sorry. It won’t happen again,” Maya stammered, struggling to explain herself.
“Meet me in my office!” Nia snapped.
She immediately ordered Maya to follow her and gathered the rest of the employees inside her office. She was already furious about the declining sales and had convinced herself that her staff simply weren’t working hard enough.
Now, she wanted everyone to understand exactly who was in charge and how far she was willing to go to punish anyone who disobeyed her.
“Here’s your paycheck. YOU ARE FIRED! GET OUT!”
Nia hurled the check toward Maya and fired her in front of the entire staff.
Everyone stood frozen in disbelief. Nobody dared to intervene or remind Nia that Maya had probably fallen asleep because of the relentless workload and exhausting shifts they had all been forced to endure.
“What are you waiting for? Take your check and get out!” Nia shouted again.
That was when Victor, a 68-year-old janitor, unexpectedly stepped forward and spoke up from among the crowd.
“Nia, child, there’s something I’d like to say,” Victor said, raising his trembling hand with a gentle smile.
Nia reluctantly turned toward him. She was in absolutely no mood to listen to criticism or suggestions from an elderly custodian.
“First of all, let me tell you that we’re all genuinely happy to help you bring your vision for the store to life, Nia,” Victor began, and his opening words brought a brief smile to her face.
“But I believe these new challenges are making everyone work out of fear rather than enthusiasm. Nobody wants to lose their incentives, and perhaps we could find a way to overlook the occasional small mistake instead of punishing people so severely…”
Nia’s expression immediately hardened at Victor’s suggestions.
She couldn’t stop wondering what the other employees were thinking as they stood there nodding in agreement with him. The fact that an elderly janitor was speaking on behalf of the entire team irritated her beyond words.
*I can’t allow Victor to speak to me as though we’re equals. I don’t want the others getting the impression that they can challenge my authority,* Nia thought angrily.
“That’s enough, Victor!” she suddenly blurted out, leaving everyone in the room stunned.
“Why don’t we start by correcting our own mistakes before making suggestions about how I should run this place, huh?
Do you think I haven’t noticed how late you arrive at work almost every day? Or how long you spend on your lunch breaks? You might have been allowed to get away with all that in the past, but things are different now.
From this moment onward, according to my rules, you will have to—”
“Nia, there’s actually a reason I’ve been arriving later than the others…” Victor tried to explain.
Nia couldn’t believe that the old man had interrupted her for a second time. When she noticed the other employees watching her closely, clearly waiting to see how she would respond, she decided this was the perfect opportunity to put her foot down and make an example of someone once and for all.
“I don’t care about your reason! And nobody gave you permission to interrupt me, did they?”
Victor froze in disbelief. He had worked at the store for years, but he had never before been on the receiving end of Nia’s anger or disrespect.
“Let this be a lesson to everyone here,” Nia announced, turning toward the rest of the staff.
“Anyone who makes excuses while I’m in charge will be fired. Just like Victor and Maya are about to be!” she declared coldly.
Victor’s face turned pale. He had never imagined that a simple attempt to offer advice would end with him losing his job. For a moment, he seemed ready to plead with her to reconsider.
“That’s right! You heard me.
Both of you are fired! Thank you for all the years you’ve spent working here, but I no longer consider either of you suitable for this workplace.
You may leave now!” Nia announced, almost jubilantly, as she dismissed both the elderly janitor and the saleswoman.
Realizing that nothing they said would change Nia’s decision, Maya and Victor quietly left the store. The remaining employees watched them walk away, their faces filled with shock, disappointment, and tears. Nobody dared to say another word.
That might have marked the end of Victor’s career as a custodian at the store. However, something far more extraordinary was waiting for him the very next day.
Mr. Gordon, the owner of the multimillion-dollar retail chain, made an unexpected visit to the outlet the following morning.
He had come specifically to meet Nia, discuss the alarming decline in revenue, and understand what had gone wrong at one of his biggest stores.
“Good morning, everyone! How are things going?” Mr. Gordon greeted the employees as he walked in.
Before long, he noticed the disappointment written across their faces and sensed that something was seriously wrong.
“Mr. Gordon, things could certainly be much better,” one of the employees replied, prompting several others to nod in agreement.
“I see! What’s going on, everyone? Why does everybody look so serious? Aren’t you excited? Christmas is approaching, so what are your plans for the holidays?”
“Mr. Gordon, some of us were hoping to get a few extra days off this Christmas so we could spend more time with our families. But Miss Ferguson has allowed us only two days of leave,” another employee explained.
Mr. Gordon began to understand that there was more happening inside the store than he had initially realized. He thanked the employees and summoned Nia to his office.
“Miss Ferguson, I’ve been reviewing the figures, and our revenue has dropped drastically. Can you explain what happened? I thought you would be able to manage everything independently.
Is there something you’re struggling with? Do you need any assistance?” Mr. Gordon asked.
Nia offered a series of vague explanations and immediately shifted the blame onto her employees.
“Mr. Gordon, I’ve been doing everything I can, but the staff are incredibly lazy. I have to monitor almost every individual closely just to make sure things get done. They’re accustomed to working at a slow pace, and whenever I ask them to complete their tasks faster, they struggle to keep up.”
“I see…” Mr. Gordon replied thoughtfully. “But weren’t these the same employees we had last month? The business was doing perfectly well back then, wasn’t it? We haven’t hired any new staff recently, so I find it difficult to understand why they’ve suddenly become so lazy.”
Nia pressed her lips together and had little choice but to nod when Mr. Gordon gave her exactly one month to turn things around and restore the store’s performance.
“Just one month, Miss Ferguson!” he warned before leaving the office.
As he prepared to leave the store, however, Mr. Gordon suddenly stopped and looked around.
“By the way, where’s Victor?
He’s usually the first person to greet me whenever I visit this outlet, but I haven’t seen him today. Where is he? Could someone please call him? I’d love to sit down and have a cup of tea with him.”
Nia had absolutely no idea that Victor and Mr. Gordon shared such a close relationship. Hesitantly, she decided to explain what had happened.
“Mr. Gordon, I had no choice but to fire him. Victor was constantly arriving late and violating our workplace policies.
Besides, he’s getting too old to continue working here.”
“WHAT DID YOU JUST DO? WHO GAVE YOU THE AUTHORITY TO FIRE HIM? Do you have any idea what a terrible mistake you’ve made by dismissing the co-owner of this entire store?”
Mr. Gordon’s expression turned furious as the truth began to sink in.
“Now I understand why our business has been suffering!” he exclaimed.
Until that moment, Nia hadn’t the slightest idea who Victor really was. She stared at Mr. Gordon in disbelief.
“What? The co-owner? But… he’s just a janitor!” she exclaimed.
“Who told you that?” Mr. Gordon began, struggling to contain his emotions.
“When I was a little boy, my father owned only this one store. It was his very first business venture, the beginning of everything we have today.
And I still remember Victor. Back then, he was a middle-aged man working as a janitor. He was one of the hardest-working and kindest people I had ever known.”
Mr. Gordon’s eyes began to fill with tears, and his glasses fogged as he continued telling the story.
“I don’t remember every detail of what happened that day, but my father told me that I had chased an ice cream van and nearly run into the path of an approaching car. Victor happened to see me while he was taking out the trash. Without thinking twice, he rushed toward me.
He pushed me out of the car’s path and saved my life. But in doing so, he was struck by the vehicle himself and ended up in intensive care.”
Mr. Gordon’s father had paid for Victor’s entire medical treatment. When Victor eventually recovered, he wanted to reward him in a meaningful way. He offered Victor a share in the business as a gesture of gratitude for saving his only son’s life.
“Do you know what Victor said when my father offered him that reward? He simply replied, ‘I only did what any decent human being should do. Tom’s life is far more precious than any reward, and I’m just grateful I was able to save him!’
That’s the kind of heart Victor has. He is one of the most genuinely selfless people I’ve ever known!”
“My father kept insisting that Victor accept his offer. Eventually, Victor agreed to become a co-owner of the business, but he had just one condition: he wanted to continue working as a janitor. My father respected his wishes and agreed. And Victor has continued working here ever since.”
“He never had another family of his own. He lost his wife and baby during childbirth, and after that tragedy, he began treating the people who worked here as his family.
He also donated all his earnings to homeless people and orphaned children.”
“Every morning, before coming to work, Victor visits shelters to provide food for homeless children. Sometimes, traffic makes him late, which explains why he occasionally arrives after the others. He has always been hardworking, generous, and fair to everyone.
It’s heartbreaking that you couldn’t recognize the kindness of a man who has devoted so much of his life to this place.”
Mr. Gordon hurried toward the exit, but before leaving, he stopped and turned back to deliver one final announcement that Nia was completely unprepared for.
“You need to apologize to Victor. Starting tomorrow, he will take over the management of this unit.
I’ll return to the store, and Victor will have the final say on whether you deserve to keep your position or whether I should dismiss you.”
Nia stood speechless as Mr. Gordon walked away, leaving her future with the company in the hands of the very man she had insulted and fired. She was terrified that Victor would dismiss her the following day.
“How am I supposed to increase sales in just one month?” she panicked.
“And how will I even face Victor? He should have told me he was a co-owner. It’s his fault for keeping that information from me.
He simply walked out when I fired him, and now everything is turning against me. God, what am I going to do?”
A thousand anxious thoughts raced through Nia’s mind as she drove toward Victor’s modest little house.
Despite being a co-owner of a multimillion-dollar business, Victor didn’t live in a luxurious mansion or surround himself with expensive possessions. He still lived in his old house, the same place where he had once shared a beautiful life with his late wife.
Even after seeing the condition of his house, Nia found it difficult to believe that Victor owned a share in such a successful business. She approached the front door, took a nervous breath, and knocked.
“Nia?!
Mr. Gordon just called me, and I had a feeling you might come by. I’ve actually made an apple pie. I hope you like apple pies!
Please, come inside,” Victor said warmly, welcoming her into his home.
He was as kind and polite as ever. There was no trace of anger or resentment in his voice, despite the humiliating way she had treated him just a day earlier.
“Forgive me, Nia. Ever since my wife passed away, this house has never quite felt the same.
Please, make yourself comfortable.”
Victor placed a slice of apple pie in front of Nia and quietly observed her. He could tell she was restless and anxious. It didn’t take much imagination to guess that Mr. Gordon had probably spoken to her about the consequences of her reckless decisions.
“When Mr. Gordon’s father was still alive, many people used to wonder what made him such a successful businessman,” Victor began, gently breaking the silence.
“Unlike most business owners, who think about profits first, customers second, and employees last, he believed in doing things differently.”
“Mr. Gordon’s father always put his employees first. He wanted them to enjoy their work and feel comfortable in their workplace. He provided nap rooms, generous bonus programs, corporate events, and weekends off. Most importantly, he never allowed customers to mistreat his staff.
He believed employees deserved to be treated like family, and he made sure they knew it.”
Nia nodded shyly, beginning to understand that perhaps she had overlooked something important. Still, she wasn’t entirely convinced.
“But how does that help a business grow?” she asked. “If employees receive so many benefits, won’t they become distracted? What if they start taking everything for granted? How will they remain productive?”
“It’s actually quite simple, my dear,” Victor explained with a gentle smile. “When employees enjoy their work and feel valued, they naturally want to give their best. That means they provide excellent service to customers.
When customers receive excellent service, they’re more likely to return. As more customers come back, the business grows, and profits increase. That’s how a successful business should operate!
A truly smart manager doesn’t rush to fire an employee whenever something goes wrong. Instead, they try to understand the problem and find a way to help that person become better at their job.”
As Victor continued enjoying his apple pie, he made another request that surprised Nia. He asked her to bring Maya back to work.
“You never really know what life has planned for someone, Nia. Look at your own journey. You started as an intern, yet you eventually became the general manager of this outlet.
In the same way, you have no idea what potential a seemingly ordinary saleswoman like Maya might have. She could have abilities and ambitions that nobody has discovered yet.
Never underestimate people, and never judge someone’s worth by their appearance or the position they hold!”
Nia managed a small, embarrassed smile. She was beginning to realize how unfairly she had treated people who had supported her from the beginning. Just as she was preparing to leave, Victor stopped her with another unexpected assurance.
“Don’t worry, Nia. I’m not going to fire you.
However, we’ll make that decision later, together with Mr. Gordon and all the employees. Everyone will have a chance to vote, alright?”
Relieved that she had been given another opportunity, Nia returned to the store and immediately gathered all the employees in her office. They entered reluctantly, wondering what new restrictions or punishments she might announce this time.
But nobody could have imagined what was about to happen next.
“Good day, everyone!” Nia began with a smile.
The employees exchanged confused glances. It was an unusual sight because, ever since her promotion, Nia had hardly ever greeted them with such warmth.
“I want to inform all of you that Victor, the company’s co-owner, will be taking charge of this outlet starting tomorrow!”
The announcement left everyone stunned. Some employees couldn’t even believe what they had just heard. They had worked alongside Victor for years, never realizing that the elderly janitor they saw every day was actually one of the company’s owners.
“Please, don’t look so shocked, everyone!
I’m young, and I’m still learning how to handle this responsibility. I’ve made mistakes, and I sincerely hope you’ll forgive me for the way I’ve treated you over the past few days. Maya and Victor will both return tomorrow, and from now on, we’ll work together as one team.
Is that clear?”
From the following day onward, Nia began following Victor’s advice and putting the principles of Mr. Gordon’s father into practice. She treated her employees with respect instead of constantly reminding them of her authority.
She started paying closer attention to their needs, listening to their concerns, and making sure everyone felt appreciated. More importantly, she worked to create an environment where employees could enjoy their jobs rather than dread coming to work each morning.
As the days went by, Nia’s efforts began producing remarkable results. The employees regained their confidence, started working enthusiastically, and once again gave their best. Just as Nia had originally hoped, the store’s sales surged during the following quarter, delivering impressive results.
Mr. Gordon was delighted with the turnaround. After seeing how much effort Nia had made to correct her mistakes, he and Victor ultimately decided that she deserved another chance and chose not to fire her.
Five years later, Nia’s career had reached even greater heights. She was promoted to CEO of the entire retail chain, overseeing all its outlets. As for Victor, he chose to continue working as a janitor because that was the job he genuinely loved. Despite his ownership stake and wealth, he never felt the need to give up the simple work that had brought him purpose and satisfaction.
