For some people, the spine-tingling thrill that horror films or unsettling literature provide is unnecessary; they’ve faced eerie experiences firsthand. While a few of these haunting recollections can be rationalized, others challenge our comprehension of reality, pushing the limits of our understanding.
The Story:
Years ago, my ex-boyfriend and I lived together, and he had a strict morning routine. Every day, he would wake up early, get out of bed, and start his workout before beginning his day. I was used to hearing the sound of his movements, the occasional creaking of the floorboards, and his heavy breathing as he pushed himself through his exercises.
But one morning, something felt different.
I was still half-asleep when I heard him get up. I could hear what sounded like his workout beginning right beside me. The rhythm of his breathing slowly grew heavier, deeper, and strangely intense.
At first, I ignored it, hoping he would finish soon. But the sound kept getting louder. It wasn’t just normal breathing anymore—it sounded almost unnatural, as if someone was struggling to catch their breath right next to my face.
The noise became so irritating that it pulled me completely out of my sleep. Annoyed and frustrated, I turned over, ready to tell him to quiet down.
I opened my eyes.
And my entire body went cold.
There was no one there.
The space beside me was empty. The room was completely still. No footsteps, no movement, no sign that anyone had been there at all.
Then, the breathing stopped.
The silence that followed felt heavier than the sound itself. I lay frozen in bed, staring into the empty room, trying to convince myself that I had been dreaming. But it had felt too real—the sound, the presence, the certainty that someone was standing right there.
My heart began racing as I slowly sat up. I looked around the bedroom, searching for some explanation, but nothing made sense. The door was closed, the room was empty, and yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that I hadn’t imagined what I heard.
Gathering enough courage, I finally stepped out of bed and walked toward the hallway.
That was when I heard another sound.
Water running.
I followed it and discovered my ex-boyfriend was upstairs in the shower, completely unaware of what had just happened.
He hadn’t been in the bedroom. He hadn’t been exercising beside me. He hadn’t even been near me.
Yet I had heard his breathing so clearly that I was certain he was right there.
To this day, I still don’t know what I heard that morning. Maybe my half-asleep mind created a terrifying illusion. Maybe there was a logical explanation I never found.
But I’ll never forget the feeling of opening my eyes and seeing an empty room where someone—or something—had seemed to be standing only moments before.
