Christian Worship Singer and Songwriter Brian Doerksen Dies at 60 Following Cancer Battle
Canadian Christian singer, songwriter and worship leader Brian Doerksen, whose music has been sung in churches around the world for decades, has died at the age of 60 following a brief battle with stage 4 cancer.
Doerksen passed away peacefully in his sleep at his family home on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. He was surrounded by loved ones during his final moments, according to a statement shared by his family through his official social-media accounts.
“On July 21st, at 6:45 a.m., our beloved Brian passed away peacefully in his sleep at his family home, surrounded by those who loved him most,” the family announced.
News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from churches, Christian musicians, worship leaders and listeners whose lives had been touched by his songs.
A brief battle with cancer
Doerksen’s family recently revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. At the time, doctors were working to determine the specific type of cancer while providing treatment and pain management.
Despite the seriousness of his condition, his family expressed gratitude for the doctors, nurses and medical professionals caring for him. Supporters across the Christian community also offered prayers and messages of encouragement.
His death came after what was described as a short battle with the disease. The announcement said he died peacefully at home, surrounded by the people closest to him.
The writer behind internationally loved worship songs
Born in 1965, Brian Doerksen became one of Canada’s most respected contemporary Christian musicians. He was especially known for writing worship songs that combined simple melodies with deeply personal expressions of faith, hope, repentance and trust in God.

“Refiner’s Fire” also had a lasting impact, encouraging worshippers to pursue spiritual renewal and holiness. Numerous Christian artists, choirs and congregations recorded or performed Doerksen’s songs over the years.
An award-winning musical career
Doerksen spent many years working with Vineyard churches and Vineyard Music, where he served as a worship pastor, songwriter, mentor and recording artist. His influence extended beyond his performances, as he helped train and encourage a new generation of worship leaders.
During the late 1990s, he lived in the United Kingdom for more than two years and mentored worship leaders and songwriters associated with Vineyard churches in Britain and Ireland. He also produced the influential 1999 worship recording Hungry.
His first recording with Integrity Music, You Shine, was recorded live in Dublin and released in 2002. Other notable albums included Today, Holy God, It’s Time, Level Ground, Grateful and Hymns for Life.
In 2003, the Gospel Music Association presented Doerksen with its International Award. He later received six Covenant Awards in 2007, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
One of the most significant moments of his career came in 2008 when Holy God won the Juno Award for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year. His album Grateful subsequently received a Juno nomination in 2019.
Faith, family and personal struggles
Away from the stage, Doerksen was devoted to his wife, Joyce, his high-school sweetheart, and their family. The couple had six adult children—four daughters and two sons. Their sons live with Fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition associated with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
His experiences as a husband and father strongly influenced his music and ministry. Rather than avoiding pain and uncertainty, Doerksen frequently explored suffering, disappointment and spiritual struggle through his songwriting.
He also spoke honestly about difficult periods in his life, including a prolonged season of personal and spiritual pain following the breakdown of a faith community he helped establish. That experience later contributed to his work with The SHIYR Poets, a musical project presenting the biblical Psalms without removing their expressions of grief, anger and lament.
Doerksen was also an instructor and the founder of “Unlocking Your Songs,” through which he helped aspiring writers develop their musical and lyrical abilities.
Tributes honour a lasting legacy
Following the announcement of his death, fellow musicians, Christian organizations and fans described Doerksen as a humble and compassionate man whose work helped millions of people express their faith.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, their six children and other family members.
