Nancy’s life was turned upside down at her husband’s funeral when she encountered an older woman holding a baby.
The woman claimed the child she was carrying belonged to Nancy’s late husband. Was she telling the truth? Or was there an even deeper secret waiting to destroy everything Nancy believed about her marriage?
Nancy stared at the final traces of her husband’s funeral service.
The flowers were beginning to wilt, the mourners had slowly disappeared, and the quiet cemetery now felt painfully empty.
She still couldn’t accept that Patrick was gone.
He had died in a tragic car accident.
It had only been a week, but every corner of their home still felt like it carried pieces of him. His favorite chair remained untouched. His coffee mug was still sitting in the kitchen cabinet. His voice seemed to echo in her mind whenever the house became too quiet.
How could someone who had been beside her every day suddenly be gone forever?
With a heavy heart, Nancy walked toward the cemetery’s exit, forcing herself to think about the future.
She knew she couldn’t stay trapped in grief forever. Somehow, she had to figure out how to rebuild a life without the man she thought she would grow old with.
Then, suddenly, an older woman stepped into her path.
The woman was holding a baby wrapped in a thin blanket.
The baby was crying softly.
“Are you Nancy?” the woman asked.
Nancy stopped.
Something about the woman’s expression unsettled her. She looked exhausted, almost as if she had been carrying a painful secret for years.
“Yes, I am,” Nancy replied cautiously. “Who are you?”
The woman hesitated for a moment.
“My name is Amanda.”
Nancy waited.
She expected a simple explanation. Perhaps the woman was one of Patrick’s acquaintances or someone from his past.
She never expected the words that came next.
“The baby I’m holding… is Patrick’s daughter.”
For a moment, Nancy couldn’t understand what she had heard.
The world around her seemed to go silent.
“What did you say?”
Amanda looked down at the baby, then back at Nancy.
“She is your husband’s child.”
Nancy felt the blood drain from her face.
“No,” she whispered.
Amanda stepped closer.
“Only you can take care of her now,” she said quietly. “Her mother can’t provide for her anymore.”
A cold shiver traveled through Nancy’s body.
She stared at the tiny baby.
A baby who supposedly belonged to the man she had loved more than anyone.
“No,” Nancy repeated, shaking her head. “It can’t be true.”
She stepped backward.
“Patrick was a loving husband. He would never do this to me.”
The pain in her voice was clear.
She didn’t want to believe that the man she trusted had betrayed her.
She turned away.
She refused to let a stranger destroy Patrick’s memory with a shocking accusation.
“Watch out!”
Nancy suddenly collided with someone.
She looked up and realized she had walked straight into one of Patrick’s old friends.
“Mike,” she said.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention.”
Mike immediately noticed the sadness on her face.
“I’m so sorry about Patrick,” he said gently. “I still can’t believe what happened.”
Nancy forced a small smile.
“Thank you.”
Mike tried to continue the conversation, offering memories of Patrick and sharing condolences, but Nancy’s mind was somewhere else.
The baby.
Amanda’s words.
The impossible accusation.
She politely ended the conversation as soon as she could and hurried toward her car.
She told herself she was being ridiculous.
Patrick was gone.
He couldn’t defend himself.
And she wouldn’t allow a stranger’s claim to stain the memory of her husband.
But as Nancy reached her car and opened the door, she froze.
The baby was lying in the back seat.
Crying.
Her heart nearly stopped.
She looked around the empty parking area.
Amanda was nowhere to be seen.
“How… how did you get here?” Nancy whispered.
She checked the surroundings again, hoping Amanda would suddenly appear and explain everything.
But there was no one.
The baby continued crying.
The weather had turned cold, so Nancy quickly removed her jacket and carefully wrapped it around the little girl.
That was when she noticed something.
A small mark on the baby’s neck.
A birthmark.
Nancy’s hands trembled.
She knew that mark.
Because Patrick had the exact same birthmark in the same place.
Her mind raced.
“No…” she whispered.
She wanted to reject the thought immediately.
She wanted to believe there was another explanation.
But deep down, she knew she needed the truth.
If Patrick had been unfaithful to her, she deserved to know.
And if this child was really his, she needed proof.
Nancy drove home with the baby and went straight to Patrick’s belongings.
Her hands shook as she picked up his hairbrush.
She collected a few strands of hair and stared at them for a long moment.
She never imagined she would ever have to do something like this.
She never imagined she would question the man she had trusted for so many years.
But now, everything had changed.
The only thing left was the truth.
She drove to the hospital.
“Hello, I’d like to request a paternity test,” Nancy told the receptionist.
The receptionist looked at the baby, then at Nancy’s tired face.
“Okay, ma’am. The results usually take several days.”
“Can it be done faster?” Nancy asked. “I’ll pay for expedited service.”
The woman studied her expression and nodded.
“We do offer urgent testing. It will cost more.”
“I’ll do it.”
Nancy submitted the samples and paid without hesitation.
Then she sat in the hallway, waiting.
The baby began crying again.
Nancy looked down at her.
Despite everything, despite the confusion and pain, she couldn’t ignore the tiny life in front of her.
She checked the diaper.
It was clean.
“She must be hungry,” Nancy whispered.
There was still time before the results arrived, so she drove to a nearby supermarket and bought baby formula, bottles, diapers, and everything she thought the child might need.
She didn’t know what the future would look like.
She didn’t know whether Patrick had betrayed her.
But she knew one thing.
The baby had done nothing wrong.
She returned to the hospital hallway and fed the baby while waiting for the answer that could change everything.
Minutes passed.
Then hours.
Finally, a nurse approached.
“Mrs. Nancy?”
Nancy stood immediately.
The nurse handed her an envelope.
“The results are inside.”
Nancy stared at it.
This was the moment she had been waiting for.
And yet, she was terrified to open it.
Because once she knew the truth…
There was no going back.
