Veteran British actor Michael Byrne, whose memorable performances in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 made him a familiar face to audiences around the world, has died at the age of 82. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues celebrating a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades.

Born in London in 1943, Byrne trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama before launching a distinguished acting career on stage with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company during the 1960s. Byrne was perhaps best known to movie fans for portraying Nazi Colonel Ernst Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), one of the franchise’s most memorable antagonists. A new generation of viewers later recognized him as the elderly Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), where his brief but powerful performance left a lasting impression.
