\nHer high heels clicked on the tile, and her posture radiated confidence.
\nIt was Victoria Adams, wife of the well-known businessman Robert Adams.
\nEmily had seen her before in torn-up magazines she found in dumpsters.<\/p>\n
Emily froze. She couldn\u2019t understand what a woman like her was doing in a hot, noisy kitchen. People like that didn\u2019t go near such places, let alone notice the workers\u2019 hustle.<\/p>\n
But Victoria seemed to know exactly what she was doing. She walked confidently toward a table where a chef was putting the final touches on an elegant dish. Emily watched as Victoria glanced around, checking to see if anyone was watching.<\/p>\n
The chef stepped away to talk to a waiter, and in that moment, the woman quickly pulled a small bottle from her purse.
\nIt glinted in her hands, the light bouncing off the dark glass.
\nEmily leaned in closer, trying to see what she was doing.<\/p>\n
Victoria unscrewed the cap and dripped a few drops of dark liquid onto the food. Her hands moved steadily, without hesitation. Then she closed the bottle, slid it back into her purse, and walked away like nothing had happened.<\/p>\n
Her face remained calm \u2014 even satisfied. Emily\u2019s heart clenched.
\nShe realized she had just witnessed something terrible.<\/p>\n
This wasn\u2019t a mistake.
\nShe had seen poison.
\nShe knew Victoria had poisoned the dish \u2014 and this wasn\u2019t a joke.<\/p>\n
The dish \u2014 beautifully arranged meat and garnish \u2014 still looked delicious, but Emily now knew it was a deadly trap.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s poison,\u201d she whispered, feeling her insides freeze.<\/p>\n
Robert Adams looked down at the ragged little girl standing by his table.
\nShe couldn\u2019t have been more than ten years old, her hair tangled, cheeks smudged with dirt \u2014 but her big green eyes held a seriousness he couldn\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n

Robert looked toward Victoria, who was just returning from the restroom, walking gracefully between tables.
\nShe looked flawless, as always \u2014 the red dress hugging her perfect figure, her makeup flawless, her smile radiant as she greeted acquaintances.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think you\u2019re mistaken,\u201d he said, gently pushing the girl aside. \u201cYou should leave before I call security.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Emily stood her ground, fists clenched.
\n\u201cPlease,\u201d she begged. \u201cDon\u2019t eat it. I saw what she did.\u201d<\/p>\n
At that moment, Victoria reached the table. For a fraction of a second, her eyes landed on the girl \u2014 and her smile froze.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho is this\u2026 child?\u201d she asked, forcing a sweet expression back onto her face.<\/p>\n
\u201cA beggar,\u201d Robert replied, though something had shifted in his voice.
\nHis eyes flicked between the plate and his wife\u2019s face.<\/p>\n
\u201cSecurity should be called,\u201d said Victoria, motioning to a waiter. \u201cI can\u2019t believe they let street kids bother the customers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily looked her in the eye.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy did you poison his food?\u201d she asked, clearly and loud enough for the nearby tables to hear.<\/p>\n
Conversations stopped.
