Being a single dad to two little girls, Emma, who was four, and Lily, who was five, was the hardest job I\u2019d ever had. My wife had left us to travel the world, and now it was just me and the girls. I loved them more than anything, but balancing work, cooking, and keeping the home running often left me drained.<\/p>\n
Every morning I woke up early, first to rouse the girls.
That morning was no different.<\/p>\n

I turned back to her. \u201cPlease\u2026 stay. Let\u2019s talk after I get them.\u201d<\/p>\n
She hesitated, then whispered, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n
Relief washed over me. I hurried upstairs. \u201cGirls, we have a surprise guest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Back in the kitchen, the woman stood by the window, unsure, ready to run.
\u201cDon\u2019t leave,\u201d I said gently. \u201cI just want to thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma tilted her head. \u201cWho is she, Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re about to find out,\u201d I said, pulling out a chair. \u201cPlease\u2026 sit. Can I get you some coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded faintly and sat down, wringing her hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy name\u2019s Jack,\u201d I began. \u201cThese are my daughters, Emma and Lily. You\u2019ve been helping us\u2026 but why?\u201d<\/p>\n
She took a trembling breath. \u201cMy name is Claire. Two months ago, you helped me when I was in a very bad place.\u201d<\/p>\n
I frowned, searching my memory. \u201cHelped you? When?\u201d<\/p>\n
Claire\u2019s voice cracked. \u201cI was lying on the side of the road, weak and desperate. Everyone drove past\u2026 but you didn\u2019t. You took me to a charity hospital. Recognition hit me. I remembered the woman I\u2019d helped that night. \u201cI couldn\u2019t leave you there,\u201d I said softly.<\/p>\n
Her eyes brimmed with tears. \u201cMy ex-husband tricked me. He brought me from Britain to America, took everything, then abandoned me. I had nothing. But you\u2026 you gave me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma and Lily listened, wide-eyed. \u201cThat\u2019s so sad,\u201d Emma whispered.<\/p>\n
Claire continued, \u201cYour kindness gave me the strength to start over. The embassy helped me with papers. I got a job with the postal service. But I wanted to repay you somehow. I saw how tired you looked\u2026 so I started helping with little things.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at her, overwhelmed. \u201cClaire\u2026 you can\u2019t sneak in like this. It\u2019s dangerous\u2014for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
She lowered her head. \u201cI know. I\u2019m so sorry. I only wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma reached across the table and held her hand. \u201cThank you for the pancakes. They were yummy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Claire smiled through tears. \u201cYou\u2019re welcome, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n
I took a deep breath. \u201cListen\u2026 no more sneaking in, okay? But how about this\u2014why don\u2019t you join us for breakfast sometimes? Properly. As our guest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Claire\u2019s face lit up, tentative hope in her eyes. \u201cI\u2019d like that. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
