But I brushed it off as some side effect from being away from home for so long or getting so used to the disinfectant scent of the hospital.<\/p>\n

She tilted her head, studying me like I was some kind of abstract art piece she couldn’t quite figure out. “I’ve never seen you before.”<\/p>\n
“I was away for two months,” I said, my voice shaking with anger. The wooden horse trembled in my hand, and I lowered it, feeling ridiculous. “Who gave you the key to MY apartment?”<\/p>\n
“Michael,” she replied without hesitation. “He told me I could come anytime. Said to make myself at home.”<\/p>\n
She gestured around vaguely, like she was showing off her own space.<\/p>\n
The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet. Michael. My husband. The man I’d been missing desperately, the man I’d trusted completely, the man I’d defended to my suspicious mother for years.<\/p>\n

Steam rose from his favorite mug, the one I’d given him for our first anniversary. He looked so normal, so peaceful, like nothing insane was happening.<\/p>\n

His coffee mug froze halfway to his mouth. “Wait \u2014 what?”<\/p>\n
The woman stared at him and slowly shook her head. “That’s not my Michael. I\u2026 I don’t know what’s going on here, but Michael \u2014 my Michael \u2014 gave me the key. I visited him here\u2026 I can prove it. I dropped my perfume bottle in the bathroom, and a piece of the tile broke off.”<\/p>\n
“That’s what I’ve been smelling,” I muttered.<\/p>\n
It made sense now, but one big mystery still remained.<\/p>\n
Michael and I exchanged a look. Something wasn’t adding up. His confusion seemed too real, too genuine for someone caught in a lie.<\/p>\n
“Show us a picture of your ‘Michael,'” I demanded, crossing my arms.<\/p>\n
She hesitated, then pulled out her phone. After a few swipes, she turned the screen toward us. The moment I saw the face, my jaw dropped. The pieces clicked together with nauseating clarity.<\/p>\n
“Jason? Your 24-year-old, no-good little brother?” I blurted out, looking at Michael.<\/p>\n
The same brother who’d “borrowed” money from us three times and never paid it back. The one who always had an excuse for everything.<\/p>\n
Michael groaned, rubbing his temples. Coffee forgotten, he slumped in his chair.<\/p>\n
“Yeah… I let him stay here while I was on my work trip. I gave him the key and told him not to mess with anything. He must’ve\u2026 he must’ve brought someone over. Lied to her. To you, I mean.”<\/p>\n
The woman scoffed, crossing her arms. “I knew it was weird that such a young guy lived in a place like this. And now he’s ignoring my calls. That’s why I decided to show up here today. Clearly, I’ve been played.”<\/p>\n
My hands curled into fists. “So, while I was gone taking care of my sick mother, your irresponsible brother was playing house in our home? And you didn’t even bother to check what he was doing?”<\/p>\n
Michael sighed, shaking his head.<\/p>\n
“You’re right,” he sighed. “It’s my fault. I should have checked. I just… I thought he’d finally grown up.”<\/p>\n
“Do you have any idea how humiliating this is? For me? For her?” I gestured to the woman, who now looked as angry as I felt. “We’ve both been lied to, and you just sat here drinking coffee like everything was fine!”<\/p>\n
He stood and came around to place a hand on my elbow. “Baby, I’m sorry. I’ll fix this. I’ll talk to Jason. Make him understand what he did wrong.”<\/p>\n
“No, we’re going to teach him a lesson,” I replied.<\/p>\n
I assured the woman that Michael and I would make sure Jason regretted his misdeeds as I showed her out. A plan formed in my mind, fueled by two months of stress and frustration.<\/p>\n
Back in the kitchen, I grabbed my phone and dialed Jason’s number. When he picked up, I spoke in my coldest voice. “I know everything. And I reported an intruder to the police. Someone who wasn’t on the lease, that was sneaking into my home. Guess whose name I gave them?”<\/p>\n
Michael caught on immediately. He nodded approvingly and gestured for me to pass him the phone.<\/p>\n
I gave him the phone, and he put it on speaker. “Oh, and Jason? That girl you lied to? Yeah, she reported you too. For fraud, actually. Since you pretended to own property you didn’t.”<\/p>\n
On the other end of the line, Jason’s voice cracked with panic. “Oh, man… What was I thinking? Please, you can’t do this to me. I just started that new job!”<\/p>\n
For the next thirty minutes, Jason tripped over himself apologizing to me and Michael, begging us to retract the police report I’d lied to him about filing.<\/p>\n
His voice went from panicked to terrified when we mentioned how disappointed his parents would be to hear about this.<\/p>\n
Michael shook his head, even though Jason couldn’t see him. “You’re officially banned from our place, Jason. And don’t even think about asking for a spare key again. Ever. I mean it this time.”<\/p>\n
