<\/p>\n\u201cThe Notebook\u201d star Gena Rowlands has died at the age of 94 after battling Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n
According to TMZ, the retired actress passed away Wednesday afternoon at her home in Indian Wells, Calif., where she was surrounded by loved ones.<\/p>\n

Her husband, Robert Forrest, and her daughter Alexandra \u201cXan\u201d Cassavetes, 58, were present, per the outlet.<\/p>\n
TMZ reported that Rowlands\u2019 son, Nick Cassavetes \u2014 who directed the 2004 movie \u2014 had paid her frequent visits this week.
\nIt\u2019s unclear whether Rowlands\u2019 other daughter, Zoe Cassavetes, 54, was there when she died.<\/p>\n
Though her exact cause of death has not yet been shared, Nick, 65, revealed his mother\u2019s Alzheimer\u2019s diagnosis in June while celebrating the 20th anniversary of \u201cThe Notebook,\u201d in which her character, Allie, develops the progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer\u2019s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she\u2019s had Alzheimer\u2019s,\u201d shared Nick, whose maternal grandmother, actress Lady Rowlands, also suffered from the disease.
\n\u201cShe\u2019s in full dementia, and it\u2019s so crazy \u2014 we lived it, she acted it and now it\u2019s on us,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
When the film came out, Rowlands explained how her mom\u2019s struggle with Alzheimer\u2019s influenced her decision to play Allie.<\/p>\n
\u201cI went through that with my mother, and if Nick hadn\u2019t directed the film, I don\u2019t think I would have gone for it \u2014 it\u2019s just too hard,\u201d she admitted to O Magazine at the time. \u201cIt was a tough but wonderful movie.\u201d
\nRowlands is best known for her acclaimed collaborations with her late husband, John Cassavetes, including the movies \u201cA Woman Under the Influence\u201d (1974) and \u201cGloria\u201d (1980). She received Oscar nominations for both.<\/p>\n
Her last feature film was the 2014 comedy \u201cSix Dance Lessons in Six Weeks,\u201d co-starring Cheyenne Jackson.<\/p>\n
