Sara\u2019s eyes filled with tears as she hugged Lily tightly. \u201cYou\u2019re our daughter, Lily. Your daddy\u2014your real daddy\u2014is right here. He always has been.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lily nodded slowly, wiping her eyes on her sleeve. But the damage had been done. How could Carol, someone we trusted, say something so confusing to our child?

She glared at us, muttering something under her breath as she walked out, but I didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After slamming the door behind Carol, Sara and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n

Then, she sank into the couch with her face buried in her hands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll get through this,\u201d I said quietly, though the anger in my chest was still burning hot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sara nodded, but I could see the heartbreak on her face. \u201cI can\u2019t believe my own mother would do something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

We spent the rest of the evening sitting with Lily, explaining everything as gently as we could.<\/p>\n
