And that’s exactly what I did.<\/p>\n
I poured my love into my family, my home, and my children.<\/p>\n
So, when it was time to return to work after maternity leave, I wanted someone who could look after my kids as well as I did. And that’s when I found the perfect babysitter for them.<\/p>\n
Little did I know the person who seemed the best for this job would soon turn my world upside down.<\/p>\n
Liam was born just six months ago, and before that, my days had been filled with the laughter and chaos of raising my four-year-old daughter, Lily.<\/p>\n
She was my little curious little girl who was always ready to ask a hundred questions about the world. When Liam arrived, she was fascinated by him. She’d peer into his crib and giggle every time he yawned.<\/p>\n
But as much as I loved my time at home with them, reality was knocking. My maternity leave was ending, and I had to return to work soon. The thought of leaving my children made my chest tighten, but I had no choice.<\/p>\n
That’s where Janice came in.<\/p>\n
We had hired her months before my leave ended, just to see how well she got along with Lily and Liam. From the very first day, I could tell she had a natural warmth with children.<\/p>\n
“Hey, munchkin,” she greeted Lily with a wide smile that first morning. “I hear you love drawing. Want to show me your masterpieces?”<\/p>\n
Lily hesitated for half a second before nodding eagerly and pulling Janice by the hand toward her little art table.<\/p>\n
And Liam? He settled almost instantly when Janice held him and hummed softly. I had never seen anyone besides myself or Paul soothe him that quickly.<\/p>\n
Even in those first few weeks, I knew she was special. She handled the kids like they were her own.<\/p>\n
“She’s a godsend,” I told Paul one evening, watching from the kitchen as Janice helped Lily with her puzzles while bouncing Liam on her knee.<\/p>\n
“She really is,” Paul agreed. “We lucked out with her. It’s hard to find someone you can actually trust these days.”<\/p>\n
The best part was that Janice didn’t just take care of the kids. She kept me in the loop throughout the day and sent me little messages and pictures while I was at work.<\/p>\n
Liam just finished his bottle and is already dozing off. Such a sleepy little guy! \u263a\ufe0f<\/p>\n
Lily wanted to show you her drawing! She says it’s a \u2018unicorn princess astronaut.’ I think it’s a masterpiece.<\/p>\n
She even helped with small things around the house like setting up dinner ingredients so I wouldn’t have to scramble after work.<\/p>\n
“I don’t know how we got so lucky,” Paul said one night as he stirred the pasta Janice had prepped earlier. “She’s honestly the best thing to happen to this house in a long time.”<\/p>\n
At the time, I had smiled, agreeing with him completely. I didn’t know that just a few weeks later, I’d be replaying these conversations in my mind.<\/p>\n
Because as perfect as Janice seemed, there was something she hadn’t told us.<\/p>\n
And I wouldn’t find out until the day Lily tugged on my sleeve and whispered a chilling secret in my ear.<\/p>\n
It was an ordinary Sunday. The kind of day where everything feels comfortably predictable.<\/p>\n
Liam was napping in his crib, Paul was fixing something on the patio, and I was in the kitchen. That’s when I felt a small tug on my sleeve.<\/p>\n
I looked down to see Lily standing there.<\/p>\n
“Mommy\u2026” she said in a whisper. “Janice has a secret.”<\/p>\n
A strange chill ran down my spine.<\/p>\n
I crouched to her level, brushing a curl from her face. “A secret? What kind of secret, baby?”<\/p>\n
Lily shifted on her feet. “It’s what she does when she puts me down for my nap.”<\/p>\n
I frowned. “What does she do?”<\/p>\n
Her voice dropped lower as if she was afraid someone else would hear. “I followed her once. Well\u2026 a few times. I pretended to sleep, but I didn’t.”<\/p>\n
I stared at her, my heart suddenly beating faster. “And then what happened?”<\/p>\n
“When she thought I was asleep\u2026” Lily swallowed. “She went into your bedroom. And she took off her clothes.”<\/p>\n
I felt my stomach drop.<\/p>\n
“What?” My voice barely came out.<\/p>\n
Lily nodded solemnly. “And then I heard weird noises.”<\/p>\n
Weird noises? I thought as a sickening feeling crept through my body.<\/p>\n
“What kind of noises?” I asked.<\/p>\n
Lily thought for a while. “I don’t know. Just\u2026 weird sounds. I didn’t look for long. But she always does it when I take my nap.”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t breathe.<\/p>\n
Janice. In my bedroom. Taking off her clothes. Weird noises.<\/p>\n
What made things worse was that I knew Paul had been coming home earlier than usual the past couple of weeks. I had even commented on it.<\/p>\n
“Wow, you’re home early,” I had said, setting the table last Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Paul had just shrugged, loosening his tie. “Yeah, things were slow at the office. Figured I’d head home and relax.”<\/p>\n
Relax.<\/p>\n
My fingers curled into my palm.<\/p>\n
Was it possible\u2026?<\/p>\n
I shook the thought away, forcing myself to stay logical. I couldn’t jump to conclusions. Not yet.<\/p>\n
But later that night, my suspicion only grew.<\/p>\n
We were sitting on the couch, watching TV. Paul was beside me, scrolling through his phone. I kept stealing glances at him and noticed the way his gaze followed Janice when she moved around the house.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t obvious. Not the way some men leer.<\/p>\n
But there was something. A certain awareness. The kind of look that made my skin prickle.<\/p>\n
I took a slow breath and turned to him. “So\u2026 what do you think of Janice?”<\/p>\n
“What do you mean?” he asked.<\/p>\n
“I mean\u2026” I forced a small smile. “You always say she’s great with the kids. But what do you really think of her?”<\/p>\n
“I think she’s amazing. I mean, we really lucked out, right? She takes care of the kids and even helps around the house. I don’t know how we managed without her.”<\/p>\n
I nodded slowly, my heart pounding.<\/p>\n
That’s exactly what he had said before. The same words. As if it had been rehearsed.<\/p>\n
Something wasn’t right.<\/p>\n
And I was going to find out the truth.<\/p>\n
The next day, I left work early. I didn’t tell Paul. I didn’t tell Janice. I wanted to catch her in the act.<\/p>\n
I parked down the street, just far enough that my car wouldn’t be seen from the front windows. My heart pounded as I crept toward the house.<\/p>\n
I unlocked the door and quietly slipped inside. As I tiptoed toward the living room, I heard Lily’s soft breathing. It was her nap time. And it meant Janice was in my room.<\/p>\n
My heart pounded against my chest as I moved up the stairs.<\/p>\n
I slowly walked toward my bedroom, imagining what I’d see inside. As I reached the door, I noticed it was slightly ajar. I could hear something inside.<\/p>\n
A soft hum. A rhythmic sound.<\/p>\n
I held my breath and pushed the door open.<\/p>\n
And there was Janice.<\/p>\n
She stood in front of my mirror, adjusting a stunning dress. It wasn’t mine. I had never seen it before.<\/p>\n
Around her were clothes neatly folded and piled up.<\/p>\n
And the strange noises? That was the gentle hum of a sewing machine.<\/p>\n
Janice gasped when she saw me. “Oh! You weren’t supposed to see this yet!”<\/p>\n
“What the heck is going on?” I asked with wide eyes. “What are you doing in here?”<\/p>\n
She signed while glancing at the dresses.<\/p>\n
“I\u2026 I wanted to surprise you.”<\/p>\n
“Surprise me?” I asked. “With what?”<\/p>\n
Janice hesitated, then gestured to the clothes. “You always spend money on your house, on Lily, and even on me. But I’ve never seen you spend money for yourself. I see you wearing the same clothes over and over. So, I thought\u2026 maybe I could do something for you.”<\/p>\n
I stared at her as I tried to process what was going on.<\/p>\n
“I’m a seamstress, you know,” she continued. “I noticed we’re the same size, so I started sewing in my free time. I was just making sure they fit before I gave them to you.”<\/p>\n
My babysitter had been secretly making me clothes? I thought. And I was thinking she and my husband\u2026 Oh, God!<\/p>\n
“I\u2014” My throat tightened. “I thought\u2014”<\/p>\n
“I know you must be thinking I was doing something fishy in here,” she interrupted and picked up a gorgeous dress. “But I just want you to try this on. Can you do that for me, please?”<\/p>\n
I reached out and took the dress from her. It looked beautiful.<\/p>\n
“Thank you so much, Janice,” I finally said as tears blurred my vision. “Now I know why Paul says we really lucked out. Because we did! I don’t have words to thank you for all that you do.”<\/p>\n
Then, I tried the dress.<\/p>\n
When I turned to face the mirror, I barely recognized myself. It fit perfectly.<\/p>\n
At that point, I felt like I wasn’t just a mom, a wife, or someone who put everyone else first.<\/p>\n
I was simply me.<\/p>\n
Janice grinned as she fastened the last button.<\/p>\n
“Told you,” she said proudly. “You look amazing!”<\/p>\n
I let out a small laugh, wiping the moisture from my eyes. “Okay, okay\u2026 you win. This dress is gorgeous. And so are all the other ones.”<\/p>\n
That evening, I wore each dress and modeled in the living room for Lily. She clapped and giggled as I twirled like a princess.<\/p>\n
Paul walked in just as I was adjusting the hem of a sleek blue number.<\/p>\n
“Wow,” he said, eyebrows raising. “You look\u2026 incredible.”<\/p>\n
I smiled. “Thanks to our incredible babysitter.”<\/p>\n
