Tony Roberts, a versatile, Tony Award-nominated theater performer at home in both plays and musicals and who appeared in several Woody Allen movies \u2014 often as Allen\u2019s best friend \u2014 has died.<\/p>\n

He was 85.<\/p>\n

Roberts\u2019 death was announced to The New York Times by his daughter, Nicole Burley.<\/p>\n

Roberts had a genial stage personality perfect for musical comedy and he originated roles in such diverse Broadway musicals as \u201cHow Now, Dow Jones\u201d (1967); \u201cSugar\u201d (1972), an adaptation of the movie \u201cSome Like It Hot,\u201d and \u201cVictor\/Victoria\u201d (1995), in which he co-starred with Julie Andrews when she returned to Broadway in the stage version of her popular film.<\/p>\n

He also was in the campy, roller-disco \u201cXanadu\u201d in 2007 and \u201cThe Royal Family\u201d in 2009.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
