I first noticed it Sunday night, just after Jack came home from a sleepover at his grandma’s house.<\/p>\n
My ten-year-old son, who’d always been a handful \u2014 energetic, a bit spoiled, and about as interested in discipline as a cat is in bath time \u2014 cleared the dinner table without being asked.<\/p>\n

“Not that simple?” My voice rose, raw and jagged. “You’re risking your life for what? Some outdated, barbaric ritual? Do you even hear yourself?”<\/p>\n
“It’s not just a ritual,” he snapped, finally meeting my gaze. “It’s who we are. It’s an expectation. If I don’t go\u2014”<\/p>\n
“You’ll what?” I cut him off, stepping closer. “Dishonor your family? That’s your excuse? What about your family here, Ethan? What about us?”<\/p>\n
