It was the day I had been waiting for. After months of planning every detail and dieting to fit into my dream dress, this was supposed to be the happiest moment of my life.<\/p>\n
“Come on, darling,” my father said, holding out his hand to walk me down the aisle to Jason.<\/p>\n
“How do you feel?” he asked, kissing my forehead.<\/p>\n
“Happy,” I replied softly. “I\u2019ve been dreaming of this moment for years now, Dad.”<\/p>\n
The music began, the guitarist perched on his stool, and together we walked down the aisle. Jason looked at me with a smile that made my stomach flutter. “You look beautiful, Emily,” he whispered as he took my hand.<\/p>\n
The ceremony began as expected\u2014words about love, commitment, and unity. Then, the priest turned to us.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s time for the vows,” he said.<\/p>\n
I poured my heart out first: \u201cJason, you are my best friend. I promise to support you, to always laugh with you, and to grow with you. I vow to cherish every moment we have together\u2014in this life, and the next.\u201d<\/em> My sister dabbed at her tears.<\/p>\n Then Jason began his vows.<\/p>\n “Emily, my love,” he said. He paused, looked back at his groomsmen, and smirked. They sniggered.<\/p>\n “I promise to always take out the trash when you nag me about the smell. And to hold your hand whenever we\u2019re walking through spider-infested areas because\u2014well\u2014we all know how much you love those eight-legged creatures.”<\/p>\n The groomsmen burst into laughter. A ripple of chuckles spread through the guests. My cheeks burned.<\/p>\n He continued. I wanted to disappear. The laughter grew louder with each jab. Then came the final blow: My jaw dropped. My heart sank. This was my wedding\u2014my dream moment\u2014and Jason had turned it into a comedy routine.<\/p>\n When the priest declared us married and Jason kissed me, it felt empty. Forced. Wrong.<\/p>\n During the photos, I confronted him. “What on earth was that?”<\/p>\n “Relax,” Jason said. “They were funny! Everyone loved it. Don\u2019t be so dramatic.”<\/p>\n But I wasn\u2019t being dramatic. I had never felt so small, so exposed.<\/p>\n At the reception, Jason drank heavily, stuffed himself with food, and laughed along as his brother gave a speech filled with digs at me. I wanted to cry.<\/p>\n Then came my father-in-law, Robert. He stood with a steady voice.<\/p>\n “Jason, do you know what makes a marriage work?” he asked.<\/p>\n “Love? Attraction?” Jason shrugged.<\/p>\n “No. Respect,” Robert said firmly. “And today, you failed to show your wife respect. You embarrassed her in front of everyone.”<\/p>\n Jason froze. The room grew tense.<\/p>\n “To show you how it feels,” Robert went on, “I\u2019ll share a few of your own embarrassing moments.”<\/p>\n Jason\u2019s eyes widened. “Dad, don\u2019t.”<\/p>\n But Robert continued: The room erupted in laughter. Jason\u2019s face turned crimson.<\/p>\n “Humor at someone else\u2019s expense isn\u2019t funny,” Robert said, his voice stern. “It\u2019s cruel. Emily deserves better than what you gave her today. I hope you learn that before it\u2019s too late.”<\/p>\n For the first time since the vows, I felt seen.<\/p>\n “Emily,” Robert added, turning to me, “on behalf of my son, I apologize. Jason still has a lot to learn, but I know he can do better\u2014if you allow him the chance.”<\/p>\n Jason turned to me, his voice small. “I\u2019m sorry. I thought I was being funny. Please give me another chance.”<\/p>\n I looked at him, my heart torn in two. “I\u2019ll think about it,” I said slowly. “But Jason, it\u2019s going to take more than just empty words to fix what you broke today.”<\/p>\n The music swelled and the evening carried on, but deep inside, the sparkle of my dream wedding had been stolen.<\/p>\n And even now, I don\u2019t know\u2014should I stay and hope he changes, or walk away before the ink on the marriage certificate even dries?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It was the day I had been waiting for. Oh, and remember the night you insisted on sleeping on the floor of my room after a party because you were too drunk to find your own bed?”<\/p>\n
