Usually, I enjoyed traveling alone. Especially when it came to work \u2014 there was just something about being a stranger in a different place. Even if it was fleeting.<\/p>\n

Work trips were often easy for me to be away from Tom, my husband \u2014 because I knew that he would be sitting at home watching TV and eating junk food until I returned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to do anything else,\u201d he would laugh, ushering me out the door with my luggage.<\/p>\n

Except, this time was different. Tom was going off on his own business trip.<\/p>\n

So, gearing up for this new business trip had me feeling all sorts of things. Firstly, this was a big deal \u2014 we were about to franchise our restaurant. And our meeting with investors was going to secure that.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you worry about a thing, Clara,\u201d my business partner, Malcolm said. \u201cYou just go and present everything we\u2019ve been working toward for the past six months. And be yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should come with me,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

It was the day before I flew out, and Malcolm still didn\u2019t think that he should join.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have faith in you. Besides, I can\u2019t risk leaving town. I\u2019m going to be a father any moment now.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least he had his priorities right.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll be fine,\u201d Tom said, as he dropped me off at the airport. \u201cYou\u2019ve done these things without Malcolm before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but this time there\u2019s more pressure,\u201d I said. \u201cWe\u2019re asking for a ridiculous amount from the investors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they wouldn\u2019t even be entertaining you if they didn\u2019t think that you guys were worth something. Relax, sweetheart. Be yourself and they will love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was right. There had to be something promising about our proposal \u2014 they wouldn\u2019t have set us up at such a fancy hotel if not.<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides, it\u2019s just a few days and we\u2019ll both be right back home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you nervous about your trip?\u201d I asked him, while digging in my bag for chewing gum.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot at all,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m excited, really. I\u2019ve been feeling restless for a while now. And this way, I get to escape for a while. We really need to plan a vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we get back,\u201d I promised him. \u201cWe can plan the entire thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom kissed my forehead and left.<\/p>\n

The moment I stepped onto the plane, a whirlwind of emotions engulfed me \u2014 excitement, anticipation, but above all, an undercurrent of nervous energy that I couldn\u2019t quite shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just any business trip, Clara,\u201d I told myself. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to prove yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

My flight was delayed \u2014 so I only had time to rent a car and get to the meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have to just check in later,\u201d I said to the empty car as I drove out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for your time, Clara,\u201d Grant, the head investor said, shaking my hand. \u201cYou and Malcolm did a great job on the proposal, and your presentation was great. We see the vision. We\u2019d be honored to bring it to life. But we\u2019ll get back to you officially in a day or two. My assistant will schedule a meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

It had gone as well as it could have, and I was feeling relieved. The hardest part was over \u2014 now, I just had to relax until a final decision was made.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy your stay,\u201d Grant said, nodding to me as he walked back into the conference room.<\/p>\n

The hotel\u2019s lavishness immediately enveloped me \u2014 it was exactly where I needed to be while I waited for the final verdict. I planned on checking in, showering, and then calling Tom and Malcolm with updates.<\/p>\n

As I stood at the hotel\u2019s reception, I waited for my turn. Amidst the flurry of guests, I noticed a woman who I had sat next to on the flight.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey!\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re staying here too?\u201d<\/p>\n

I smiled and nodded. Although I didn\u2019t know her, it was nice to have a familiar face around.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long will you be here for?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a few days. I\u2019m actually here for a little adventure,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a getaway from home. With my boyfriend. But it\u2019s a bit more complicated than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I asked, sipping on the complimentary champagne.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a wife,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s all just secrets. But I\u2019m not going to let that get to me! If anything, she travels a lot. And he thinks that she\u2019s having an affair with someone at work.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds crazy!\u201d I exclaimed.<\/p>\n

The story was a bit much for me. I couldn\u2019t imagine trying to justify having an affair just because someone traveled for work a lot.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t overthink it, I thought to myself. You are not responsible for someone else\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n

The woman was up next, so I moved my bag out of the way for her to get checked in.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi!\u201d she told the receptionist cheerfully. \u201cI\u2019m Veronica. My booking should be under Tom Harrison. He won\u2019t be checked in yet, because he\u2019s only flying here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart raced. Tom Harrison? My husband \u2014 Tom Harrison?<\/p>\n

It couldn\u2019t be a coincidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, ma\u2019am,\u201d the receptionist said. \u201cSince the booking was done by Mr. Harrison, I\u2019m going to need you to give me a cellphone number or email address \u2014 just something for me to confirm it. It\u2019s for security reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman laughed and said that she understood that protocols were in place.<\/p>\n

Then, she called out my husband\u2019s number.<\/p>\n

The realization hit me like a tidal wave. This was no coincidence; the woman was here with Tom! In that instant, a myriad of emotions cascaded through me \u2014 shock, disbelief, anger.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy your stay,\u201d she called out to me, taking the keycard from the receptionist. \u201cI\u2019m sure our paths will cross.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a daze, I checked myself in. I couldn\u2019t remember if I had told Tom which hotel I was staying in. I couldn\u2019t remember if he had even asked.<\/p>\n

Retreating to my room, I was consumed by a whirlwind of thoughts, each one taking me away from the business high I had been on.<\/p>\n

I wanted revenge.<\/p>\n

Later, closer to the time Tom was scheduled to arrive, I went downstairs.<\/p>\n

When I was at the reception desk, I heard the room number that Tom and his mistress would be staying in. Tearing a piece of paper from my notebook, I wrote a note to the woman \u2014 inviting her for a complimentary massage at the spa.<\/p>\n

I waited at the end of the corridor until she left the room for her massage.<\/p>\n

Then, thank goodness for shift changes, there was a different person at the desk.<\/p>\n

I repeated everything the woman had said \u2014 revealing that I was meeting my husband and he should have checked in already. I was asked to repeat his cellphone number and then, just like that, I had a keycard.<\/p>\n

I went straight to their room and waited for Tom to arrive. I kicked off my shoes and put the TV on.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoney, I\u2019m here,\u201d Tom\u2019s voice rang loud and clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurprise!\u201d I said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know you were coming to surprise me at my hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom\u2019s face paled before my eyes. His forehead began to glisten with a nervous sweat.<\/p>\n

\u201cClara!\u201d he exclaimed, trying to recover.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot who you were expecting?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Tom looked at the floor, his foot rubbing against the lush carpet.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long?\u201d I asked. \u201cHow long have you been seeing her?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSeven months,\u201d he answered without hesitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI deserve a partner who values and respects me, Tom,\u201d I spat. \u201cYou\u2019re not that man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom didn\u2019t try to answer. He didn\u2019t try to defend himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that it?\u201d I asked. \u201cSilence?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClara, I don\u2019t know what to tell you,\u201d he said. \u201cYou travel all the time. I\u2019m lonely. And you\u2019re always with Malcolm. What am I supposed to think?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re supposed to trust me. I think we\u2019re done, Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t reply. He just picked up his phone.<\/p>\n

As I walked away, leaving behind the remnants of our fractured marriage, I was enveloped by a sense of empowerment. I knew that bigger things were coming.<\/p>\n

But I still couldn\u2019t believe Tom\u2019s actions. And even worse, was the way in which he had nonchalantly spoken to me. He didn\u2019t care. He wasn\u2019t going to fight to make our marriage work.<\/p>\n

In the end, I just had my career and the opportunities that lay ahead.<\/p>\n

I went back to my room and phoned Malcolm, giving him a full update on the presentation and everything Grant had told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we wait,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we wait,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n

I hung up and went to shower off my day. I ordered room service and waited for Grant\u2019s email to pop up.<\/p>\n

It can only get better, right?<\/p>\n
