\u201cNo, it\u2019s too expensive,\u201d he refused again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe have tons of money,\u201d Polly insisted desperately.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cJust because we have money doesn\u2019t mean we have to spend it on unnecessary things. My mother raised me on her own for as long as she could, and then I handled myself because my father didn\u2019t care. And look at me! I grew up to be a millionaire. They don\u2019t need a nanny. Just tell them to behave after school,\u201d Taylor said, his tone unyielding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Polly sighed and left him alone. Their children\u2019s ages ranged between nine and five years old, so they could handle themselves while their mother worked. At least, that\u2019s what Taylor thought. Polly was a writer and worked from home. It wasn\u2019t as complex as going to the office, doing paperwork, meeting with clients, arranging proposals, and everything else he did.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He scoffed at the idea of a nanny.\u00a0Kids need to be raised by their parents only. That\u2019s how I succeeded in the world<\/i>, he thought to himself again, and he didn\u2019t have a single regret about refusing his wife\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A few days later, Polly fainted in the middle of the living room, and her eldest kid, Mark, called Taylor at the office. \u201cShould I call 911?\u201d the boy asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNo! Absolutely not,\u201d Taylor replied. \u201cCall Mara. Her number is next to the home phone. I\u2019ll be there soon. Taylor added before rushing home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mara was their neighbor, a kind nurse who worked nights. He barely trusted her, but she was definitely better than any doctor. By the time Taylor got home, Polly was awake, and Mara was checking her. The kids surrounded their mother, worried.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSo, how is she?\u201d Taylor asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLet\u2019s speak in the kitchen,\u201d Mara said briskly, almost pulling him. \u201cI think Polly needs to see a doctor. Fainting is not normal for a young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cLook, I know you distrust doctors for some reason, but she needs one, or it could happen again. Your kids are scared. Please, listen,\u201d Mara continued, staring at him intensely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll get the blood work, but no doctors. My mother died because an incompetent idiot didn\u2019t find her cancer. He misdiagnosed her, so I grew up with my abusive father only because she didn\u2019t get treatment in time,\u201d Taylor revealed. No one but Polly knew about that. \u201cWe had home births because of that, Mara. And our kids are thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Just as Mara suspected, Polly had a bit of anemia, but after some medication, she seemed to get better. After that episode, she asked Taylor if they could finally get a nanny, but he still refused.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNo, you\u2019re better. It\u2019s a waste. Money should be saved for only important things. Who knows what could happen? I\u2019m the CEO of an oil company, but what if I have to become a minimum worker later?\u201d Taylor justified.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He was meeting a huge client and wanted to arrive on time. However, the universe had other plans because there was a massive traffic jam on his usual route to the office, and the minutes dragged on forever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He hit the wheel and shook his head impatiently, waiting for anything to happen. But it was a complete standstill until he heard the sound of sirens from the back. Taylor eyed his rearview mirror and saw cars moving to the side, giving way to an ambulance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAh, hell no! They\u2019re not getting out of this traffic jam by pretending to have patients!\u201d Taylor shook his head and refused to move his vehicle as others had. The ambulance honked and honked, but he pretended nothing was happening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But Taylor felt like he was still in hell.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

The driver on the other lane rolled down his window. \u201cHey, man! Move for the ambulance!\u201d he said, but Taylor ignored him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Finally, he saw the ambulance driver, an old man, rushing to his side. \u201cSir, please move! I have a kid in the back who needs urgent care!\u201d the driver said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cNo, you\u2019re lying. But even if you\u2019re not, taking him to the doctor won\u2019t do any good. I\u2019m not moving,\u201d Taylor said unapologetically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAre you serious, man?\u201d the driver asked, shocked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYeah. I won\u2019t move!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis is illegal!\u201d the driver said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSue me. Or call the cops,\u201d Taylor shrugged, not even looking at the man now. He stared straight ahead, waiting for the traffic to move finally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI hope no one you love is ever in this boy\u2019s shoes,\u201d the driver said, spitting on the ground beside his car in disdain. He got back on the ambulance and maneuvered his way through a sidewalk, and other vehicles let him pass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After another 15 minutes of traffic, the roads cleared, and Taylor arrived at the office building in the nick of time. His client had just started speaking when his phone rang. He saw Polly\u2019s name flash across the screen but ignored the call right away.\u00a0I told her not to call<\/i>, he thought, as he listened to the client.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, Polly called again and again and again until a message popped up: \u201cMark is in the hospital! Call me ASAP!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHospital?\u201d he whispered, staring at his phone intently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMr. Brown?\u201d one of his executives said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cRoger, handle this meeting. My son is in the hospital. I have to go,\u201d Taylor said and rushed out of their meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His whole body shook. Polly was well aware of his distaste for doctors, so it would take a real emergency for her to take their son to the hospital. He knew this was bad. Taylor called her, got the hospital\u2019s name, and drove there quickly. Luckily, there were no other traffic jams like that morning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He didn\u2019t even notice where he parked his car. He only rushed through the emergency doors, asked nurses to help him, and finally met Polly outside the operating room where family members usually waited. His other kids, Jason and Mona, were holding her legs in fear.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat happened? Where is Mark?\u201d Taylor asked, distraught.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s in surgery right now. Taylor, darling. It was bad. His head was bleeding,\u201d Polly explained as she cried, and his younger kids started crying too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Taylor had to compose himself and hugged his family tightly. \u201cIt\u2019s OK. It\u2019s OK. Everything will be alright. Mark is in good hands,\u201d he almost chanted. He was trying to convince himself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A few hours later, a surgeon finally came out. They all stood with their hearts in their throats, waiting for the news.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe surgery went well. Your son is recovering in the ICU. We won\u2019t know more about his situation until he wakes up, but the margins look good,\u201d the physician said, nodding. \u201cWe\u2019re moving him now. But we\u2019ll let you know when you can see him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Polly knelt as her emotions took over her, telling her kids their big brother had made it. Meanwhile, Taylor moved toward the doctor and pressed for more details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYes, he is, sir,\u201d the physician nodded again. \u201cBut it\u2019s only because he got here in time. We heard about the crazy traffic jam earlier, and if they had taken longer, we might be having a different conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Taylor said nothing as the doctor patted his shoulder and returned to the operating area, where non-patients were prohibited.\u00a0Traffic jam?<\/i>\u00a0he thought, surprised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He turned to his wife, who had calmed down somewhat. \u201cPolly, you were in the traffic jam this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOh yeah. I was so worried. It was not moving at all for some time. The driver even got out and, apparently, fought with someone who refused to move their car. Who does that?\u201d Polly explained, scoffing at the idea that someone wouldn\u2019t move over for emergencies. \u201cBut the driver got in, road the ambulance through a sidewalk or something \u2013 I was scared for a second \u2013 but he got us here as quickly as he could. What a champ.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Polly didn\u2019t see or notice how quiet Taylor had become. \u201cKids, let\u2019s go get some snacks from the vending machine. We\u2019ll have to wait some more to see your brother,\u201d she urged, looking back at her husband.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Taylor had to clear his throat. \u201cGo. I\u2019ll stay here just in case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAlright,\u201d she smiled a bit now that the immediate danger was gone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But Taylor felt like he was still in hell. He plopped on one of the seats and stared at the wall. He had delayed the ambulance, while his son was almost dying inside. Mark would not be here if the driver hadn\u2019t been so smart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOh, yeah. My wife needs help,\u201d Taylor nodded and smiled as he stared out his car\u2019s window.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Tears burst from his eyes involuntarily. His chest constricted as his breaths came too quickly, and finally, he placed his head on his hands and cried. The realization that this was all his fault was too much to bear. He had refused a nanny, refused to move for an ambulance, and ignored his wife\u2019s calls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cTaylor,\u201d Polly whispered when she returned and hugged him. \u201cKids, come hug your Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The youngest ones embraced him as he tried to stop his sobs, but it was hard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMark will wake up soon, Daddy,\u201d his daughter, the youngest of their brood, said in her high, precious little voice, finally calming him. Nothing would take away this guilt, but he eventually stopped weeping heavily.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

They visited Mark an hour later, and the boy woke up. The doctors checked his motor skills, and everything was alright. He even spoke a little before falling asleep again. His surgeon said he was fine and told the family they would move him from the ICU to a standard room soon. Mark was officially out of danger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once his boy was placed in a normal room and safely surrounded by his family, Taylor went out and talked to one of the nurses, requesting to see the person who drove the ambulance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOh, that\u2019s James. You\u2019ll probably find him outside where most of the ambulances are parked when they\u2019re not dispatched,\u201d a nurse kindly told him, and Taylor went out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He found James immediately, and despite the rush and everything that morning, the old man recognized Taylor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWait a minute. Aren\u2019t you the guy who wouldn\u2019t move his car?\u201d James accused, pointing his finger at Taylor. But Taylor didn\u2019t stop approaching him and raised his arms to wrap the old man in a hug. James didn\u2019t like that and tried to pry him off until Taylor spoke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry. Thank you. Thank you for doing your best. It was my son. You were bringing my son here, and I\u2026 I was such an idiot. I\u2019m so sorry. I could\u2019ve lost everything,\u201d Taylor said, and the old man relented, patting Taylor\u2019s back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHow is the kid?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe\u2019s good. He woke up,\u201d Taylor said, pulling and wiping a tear. \u201cHe\u2019s resting again, but the doctor said he would recover. Thanks to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI only did my job, sir. But I\u2019m glad. I used to be a paramedic. Now I only drive, but I\u2019m glad he\u2019s safe,\u201d James nodded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhy are you still working?\u201d Taylor wondered. \u201cIf it\u2019s not too much to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWould you be interested in changing fields?\u201d Taylor suggested out of the blue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHow about you become my driver?\u201d he suggested, explaining where he worked and how much he would pay. It was more than triple what the old man made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIs this a real offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c100%,\u201d Taylor insisted. \u201cI may be an idiot, but I don\u2019t lie about business.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The old man thought about it some more and finally agreed. He worked for two more weeks at the hospital but became Taylor\u2019s driver after. The rich man didn\u2019t realize how convenient it was not to worry about driving until then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He and Polly also needed help once Mark got out of the hospital, so James ran errands, went grocery shopping, watched the kids whenever possible, and drove Taylor everywhere. After a few months, the old man had enough money for his wife Helena\u2019s surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Taylor gave James all the paid leave he needed and visited them at the hospital. Once James\u2019 wife got better, he came up with another idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cOh, yeah. My wife needs help,\u201d Taylor said and smiled as he stared out his car\u2019s window.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He realized after Mark\u2019s accident that there was no reason to have money if you didn\u2019t use it to help your family. You had to enjoy all your hard work and make your family happy. Furthermore, his disdain for doctors was gone completely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He still resented the one who didn\u2019t diagnose his mother well, but one person\u2019s negligence shouldn\u2019t reflect on the entire field. Everyone, including the ambulance driver, had worked hard to save Mark, and they did a fantastic job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
