“Here,” I said. “This is a guide to designing your own jewelry. If you want something meaningful, you should create it for yourself.”<\/p>\n
Alice’s face turned red. She looked at the booklet, then back at me, and exploded.<\/p>\n
“Are you kidding me?!” she yelled. “This is an insult!”<\/p>\n
Brandon looked mortified, but Alice didn’t give him a chance to speak. She grabbed her purse and stormed out.<\/p>\n
The silence after she left was uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
I exchanged a look with Brandon, who seemed utterly dumbfounded.<\/p>\n
“This is unbelievable,” he muttered before following her to the door.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, my husband gave me a reassuring pat on the shoulder.<\/p>\n
“You did the right thing,” he said quietly. “Some things can’t be demanded like that.”<\/p>\n

“Mom, why couldn’t you just give her the emerald ring? He asked. “You have so many others. It would’ve been a nice gesture.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, but Elisa borrows your jewelry all the time!” he argued.<\/p>\n
“Elisa borrows them,” I countered, “and then she returns them. That’s borrowing. What Alice did wasn’t borrowing. It was entitlement, plain and simple.”<\/p>\n
Brandon sighed. “You could’ve avoided this whole mess by just saying yes.”<\/p>\n
“No, Brandon,” I replied firmly, “I couldn’t. That ring is important to me. And the fact that Alice dismissed the ring I designed for her without a second thought? That tells me something.”<\/p>\n
Brandon fell silent. “You just don’t understand,” he muttered before ending the call.<\/p>\n
That was the first time my son had ever truly shut me out, and it hurt more than I wanted to admit.<\/p>\n
