Emily<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was heading home from yet another failed date, and to make matters worse, I was stuck on the bus because my date had picked me up from home, and, of course, my phone decided to die right when I needed it most.<\/p>\n

No way to call a cab or escape. I sat there, fuming, muttering every insult I could think of under my breath. Honestly, at this point, I was starting to accept the bitter truth\u2014I might never find my significant other.<\/p>\n

At 34, love always felt like something that happened to other people, not me.<\/p>\n

As I stared out the window, already planning to adopt a dog from the shelter and just give up on dating altogether, a drunk man stumbled onto the bus. My heart sank as he swayed toward me. Not today. Please. I quickly moved to another seat, still cursing the universe for making my bad day even worse.<\/p>\n

I ended up behind two women\u2014one with fiery red hair, the other wearing a ridiculous grandma-style hat. They were about my age, chatting in low but sharp tones. I hadn\u2019t meant to eavesdrop, but when your day is already a mess, overhearing other people\u2019s drama almost feels like free entertainment.<\/p>\n

Except this wasn\u2019t entertainment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so tired of her,\u201d Redhead snapped. \u201cWhy does his daughter have to live with us? She ruins everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma-Hat tilted her head. \u201cWhy not just send her to her mother?\u201d<\/p>\n

Redhead sighed dramatically. \u201cHer mom\u2019s in the hospital. I think\u2026 in a coma.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow old is the girl?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNine. And honestly, she\u2019s in the way. Jim is MY boyfriend. I want him to myself. That kid ruins everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

I froze. Who talks about a child like that?<\/p>\n

But Redhead wasn\u2019t finished. She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a hiss. \u201cI have a plan. I\u2019ll make Jim think she stole from him. Then he\u2019ll have no choice but to send her away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grandma-Hat blinked. \u201cAnd where would she go?\u201d<\/p>\n

Redhead shrugged, indifferent. \u201cNot my problem. As long as she\u2019s gone, Jim is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach twisted. I wasn\u2019t usually the type to intervene in other people\u2019s business\u2014but this? This was cruel. And if that little girl had been on the bus, I swear I would\u2019ve taken her hand and run.<\/p>\n

So when Redhead got off, I followed her.<\/p>\n

She walked to a cozy little house with a neat garden. A man\u2014handsome, tired-looking\u2014opened the door. He smiled as she kissed him deeply. He had no idea.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen on the sidewalk. Was I insane for considering knocking on a stranger\u2019s door? Maybe. But I couldn\u2019t walk away.<\/p>\n

Jim<\/strong><\/p>\n

Carla came home unusually cheerful that evening, even offering to make Michelle\u2019s favorite dinner. I wanted to believe she was warming up to my daughter, but deep down, I knew better.<\/p>\n

When a knock sounded at the door, I assumed it was nothing. But the woman standing there was different\u2014nervous, determined.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you Jim?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name\u2019s Emily. I overheard your girlfriend and her friend on the bus. She\u2019s planning to frame your daughter for theft so you\u2019ll send her away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed\u2014it sounded absurd. But then Emily mentioned the hat. Sandra. Carla\u2019s coworker.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook,\u201d I said firmly, \u201cI\u2019d never kick Michelle out. Goodnight.\u201d I started to close the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust trust me!\u201d she called. Her eyes were pleading.<\/p>\n

And then, that night, the nightmare unfolded exactly as she\u2019d said.<\/p>\n

The safe was emptied. Carla insisted I check Michelle\u2019s room. And there it was\u2014cash and jewelry hidden in her dollhouse.<\/p>\n

Carla folded her arms, smug. \u201cWe can\u2019t keep her here, Jim. She has to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words sliced me in half. But in that moment, Emily\u2019s warning echoed louder than Carla\u2019s lies.<\/p>\n

Emily<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Jim showed up at my door, I almost panicked. What had I done? But then he said the words that made my blood boil.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe actually framed Michelle.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly shouted in triumph. \u201cI knew it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim ran a hand through his hair. \u201cNow she wants me to send Michelle to a boarding school. She had brochures ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a witch,\u201d I blurted out. Then, embarrassed, I added, \u201cSorry. She\u2019s your girlfriend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jim gave me a tired smile. \u201cNot for long.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I told him my plan. It was bold, maybe even reckless\u2014but it might just expose Carla for who she really was.<\/p>\n

Jim<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next evening, I told Carla I\u2019d sent Michelle away. I watched as a smile flickered across her lips before she covered it with feigned sympathy.<\/p>\n

Finally, she said smoothly, \u201cNow we can have our happy life. Just the two of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded, then dropped the bait. \u201cBut how could Michelle know the safe code?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carla waved it off. \u201cShe must\u2019ve seen you enter it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minutes later, as Emily predicted, Carla was on the phone with Sandra, gloating. \u201cHe fell for it! That brat is gone for good.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the last straw.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have one hour to pack and leave,\u201d I said, stepping into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Carla\u2019s face drained of color. \u201cJim, wait, you don\u2019t understand\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne hour,\u201d I repeated, and walked out.<\/p>\n

Emily<\/strong><\/p>\n

While Jim confronted Carla, I stayed with Michelle. She was bright, perceptive, and so much stronger than her years.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, Emily is really cool,\u201d Michelle whispered later, tugging at his sleeve. \u201cYou should ask her on a date.\u201d<\/p>\n

I flushed, suddenly feeling like a teenager.<\/p>\n

Jim met my eyes, smiling softly. \u201cWhat do you say?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Michelle, then back at him. \u201cDo you like amusement parks?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Michelle\u2019s face lit up. \u201cYes!!\u201d<\/p>\n
