He was 83.<\/p>\n<p>Wood passed away on Friday at his Moreno Valley, California home, surrounded by friends and family, his manager and assistant, Manny Gallegos, confirmed to The Post.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2025\/01\/03\/brenton-wood-dead-singer-oogum-boogum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TMZ<\/a>\u00a0was the first to break the news.<\/p>\n<p>Though an official cause of death has not been revealed, Gallegos told The Post, \u201cIt just was his old age. He was 83 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went in his sleep peacefully. The love that he gave us, God took him the same way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gallegos added that on Thursday Woods gave him a message he wanted relayed to his fans. \u201cI might not be here for long,\u201d Woods told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Catch you on the rebound,&#8217;\u201d Gallegos revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was also the name of Wood\u2019s final tour. According to Gallegos, the tour wrapped in 2024 on Valentine\u2019s Day weekend. After that, the singer began feeling ill. He was then hospitalized in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, La., Wood grew up in San Pedro, Calif. He learned to play piano at a young age and was inspired by inspired by\u00a0doo-wop legend Jesse Belvin\u00a0and\u00a0soul star Sam Cooke.<\/p>\n<p>Around the time he attended college, the singer reportedly decided to change his name, drawing inspiration from the tony\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/concord.com\/news\/craft-recordings-announces-reissue-for-brenton-woods-18-best\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBrentwood\u201d neighborhood<\/a>\u00a0of West Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Oogum Boogum Song\u201d peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. The track wasn\u2019t Wood\u2019s only hit that year.
