My husband and I had a huge fight one evening. It was rare but not unheard of for us. We were both hot-headed individuals, and sometimes our emotions got in the way of reasoning.<\/p>\n
But long story short, Charles stormed out of the house and spent the night at his best friend\u2019s place. I could still see his location, and he called me to let me know that he\u2019d be home the next day.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just need some time to cool off,\u201d Charles said. \u201cBut I\u2019ll be home tomorrow, and we can sit down and talk. Okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
And just like that, I knew that we\u2019d be okay.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll see you tomorrow,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
With nothing but my thoughts to occupy me, I decided to take a bubble bath and have an early night.<\/p>\n
\u201cMay as well just take a personal night,\u201d I muttered to myself as the bathtub filled.<\/p>\n
The next day, I cooked up a storm. I knew that irrespective of how upset Charles had been the day before, he would look forward to dinner together once he got home.<\/p>\n
While waiting for him to come home, I lounged on the couch, scrolling through my socials when a post from my mother-in-law made my jaw drop.<\/p>\n
It featured a very unflattering picture of me with the caption:<\/p>\n
Cheers to new beginnings! I\u2019m happy to announce that my son is no longer associated with this psychotic gold digger. Charles is back on the market! Ladies under 25, please message me so that I can set up a date\u2026<\/p>\n
My heart raced as nausea took over my body. I read the words over and over, Linda\u2019s voice ringing in my head.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has to be a joke,\u201d I said, dialing my mother-in-law\u2019s number, barely able to keep my hands from shaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello?\u201d she answered, her voice sugary sweet.<\/p>\n
\u201cLinda, what the hell is this?\u201d I nearly shouted, my voice trembling with anger as I fought to hold back my tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d she asked, either completely oblivious or just acting very well.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour Facebook post!\u201d I exploded.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, that,\u201d she replied. \u201cCharles hasn\u2019t told you yet? We both decided it would be better if you two parted ways. I mean, let\u2019s face it, Jess, you\u2019re not the perfect person for my son. He deserves someone who truly appreciates him.\u201d<\/p>\n
What was she going on about?<\/p>\n
\u201cHe deserves someone who appreciates him? You mean like me? His wife? The actual woman he married?\u201d I shouted.<\/p>\n
I was pacing through my living room, trying to process what she was saying.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd why on earth would you post something like this on Facebook? This is humiliating! What will everyone think about this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, Jess,\u201d she said slowly. \u201cHe called me last night and told me all about your fight.\u201d<\/p>\n
She paused, as if trying to choose her words carefully.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said some pretty harsh things, and I just thought it was time to take action. Clearly, my son is fed up with the situation. You should just let him go. Be graceful about this, Jess. Let him meet someone new.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLinda, you are just unbelievable,\u201d I snapped, ending the call before she could respond.<\/p>\n
I sat on the couch, my mind racing. My husband and I had our problems, but we always worked through them.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur marriage is everything to me,\u201d Charles told me when we made up after one of our fights. \u201cSo, you need to believe me when I say that a few fights won\u2019t break us.\u201d<\/p>\n
But now, how could Linda think that it was her place to announce something like this? And how could Charles let her do it?<\/p>\n
Charles wouldn\u2019t hurt me like that.<\/p>\n
I ended up taking a nap on the couch. I needed my brain to just switch off for a bit.<\/p>\n
And then my husband came home.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey,\u201d he said softly, approaching me.<\/p>\n
\u201cHey?\u201d I echoed, standing up and shoving my phone in his face. \u201cExplain this, Charles? What is this?\u201d<\/p>\n
My husband took the phone and his face fell as he read the post.<\/p>\n
I knew Charles; there was no way that he would fake such a reaction.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh my God, I\u2026 Jess, I didn\u2019t know she did this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn\u2019t know? Charles, really? Your mother announced the end of our marriage on Facebook! How could she think that\u2019s okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, I called her last night to vent,\u201d he admitted, rubbing his temples.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said a lot of things I didn\u2019t mean. I was just angry, you know? But I never said that I wanted a divorce. I didn\u2019t say anything about ending our marriage. I was going to tell you everything tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat did you say to her, Charles? What made her think you wanted a divorce?\u201d I demanded, my frustration boiling over.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told her that we were arguing about money again,\u201d he confessed, looking ashamed. \u201cI told her that I was tired of the fighting and that I couldn\u2019t take it anymore. But I never said I wanted to leave you. I was just venting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, explain it to the rest of the world,\u201d I said, handing him my phone.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what to feel. On the one hand, money was a constant topic in our home. I worked in catering and it wasn\u2019t always easy to find high-paying gigs. Most of the time, the financial burden was left to Charles, and he did provide for us both.<\/p>\n
But I didn\u2019t think that the situation had gotten so bad that we were actually on the verge of divorce.<\/p>\n
My husband looked at me with sad eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it really that bad? Is it too difficult? Should we consider ending our marriage?\u201d I asked him, the questions pouring out of my mouth.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, Jess,\u201d he said firmly. \u201cWe do need to talk about it and maybe make some changes to our lifestyle, but there\u2019s nothing about divorce. I don\u2019t want it. Do you?\u201d<\/p>\n
I shook my head.<\/p>\n
Charles sighed and dialed his mother\u2019s number.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, take down the post,\u201d he said as soon as she answered.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut Charles, I thought that\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you thought wrong,\u201d he interrupted. \u201cWe had a fight. It doesn\u2019t mean that we\u2019re ending our marriage. Take it down now.\u201d<\/p>\n
I could hear her sputtering on the other end before he hung up. He turned to me, his face filled with regret.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so sorry, Jess,\u201d he said. \u201cI never meant for her to take it to such lengths.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry?\u201d I asked, feeling my tears slide down my face. \u201cDo you have any idea how humiliating this is for me? Everyone we\u2019ve ever known probably thinks that we\u2019re splitting up now. And why? Because your mother wanted to find you someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n
Charles looked down, guilt etched into his features.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know. And I\u2019ll make this right. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
He reached out and took my hand, squeezing it gently.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, since everyone thinks that we\u2019re getting divorced now anyway, let\u2019s renew our vows, Jess.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked, shock and amusement taking over.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, darling,\u201d he said. \u201cI know that our fights about money are exhausting and repetitive. But we can talk it through like always. And I think that your culinary school idea is perfect. I\u2019m going to move around some funds to pay for it, love.\u201d<\/p>\n
Culinary school was something that I had wanted for a very long time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to open doors for you, Jess. The opportunities will come flooding in.\u201d<\/p>\n
This was the man that I married. Not the sleazy one that Linda made him out to be. A man who would allow his mother to announce his divorce on her social media and allow her to plan dates for him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d I agreed. \u201cMaybe a vow renewal is exactly what we need.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the weeks that came, Charles and I planned a little ceremony with only our siblings and my parents. Linda wasn\u2019t invited. We did it in our backyard and it was probably the most healing thing we could have done for ourselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe just needed to be reminded of who we are,\u201d Charles said as we cut the cake I had made. \u201cWe\u2019re stronger together, Jess.\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll admit that my blood boils when I see Linda, but at least I know that Charles and I are good. And our communication is so much better now. I\u2019ve enrolled in culinary school and I work at a trendy caf\u00e9 part-time.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re going to succeed.<\/p>\n
