When I arrived at Leon\u2019s home to help with little Josie, I immediately sensed something was wrong.<\/p>\n

Molly, my daughter-in-law, usually greeted me with a warm smile and hug. But this time, she barely looked up from her phone. Her once-vibrant energy seemed drained, her mind somewhere far away.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, Molly,\u201d I said, trying to catch her eye.
\u201cHi, Mom,\u201d she replied flatly, her attention still glued to the screen.<\/p>\n

At first, I tried to dismiss it. But the changes became impossible to ignore. Molly, who once spent hours reading to Josie and taking her to the park, now brushed her aside with distracted promises of \u201cmaybe later.\u201d<\/em> I gladly stepped in, taking Josie out, helping with homework, and tucking her in at night. Still, it hurt to see my granddaughter longing for her mother\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n

Worse, Molly started disappearing for hours at a time. \u201cI\u2019ve got errands,\u201d<\/em> she\u2019d mutter, leaving me behind with Josie. She never explained.<\/p>\n

One day, she even arranged for her friend Emily to take Josie to the amusement park\u2014the special outing she had promised her daughter herself. Josie\u2019s disappointment cut deep.<\/p>\n

\u201cMolly, what could be more important than spending time with your daughter?\u201d I asked.
Her eyes hardened. \u201cMom, I need you to respect my choices. Please, stay out of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That was the breaking point. I couldn\u2019t ignore it anymore. When she left the house later that week, I quietly followed. She walked quickly through town and slipped into a caf\u00e9, where she met with a man I didn\u2019t recognize. They leaned close, whispering, their faces tense. My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

That night, when she returned home, I confronted her.
\u201cMolly, are you having an affair?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face went white. \u201cWhat? How could you even think that?\u201d she gasped, just as Leon entered the room.<\/p>\n

But before she could explain, Molly\u2019s body stiffened, and she collapsed to the floor. We rushed her to the hospital, fear clawing at us both.<\/p>\n

When she finally woke, pale but conscious, she whispered through tears:
\u201cI need to tell you the truth. Months ago, doctors told me I had a serious illness. I couldn\u2019t bear the thought of Josie watching me fade away. I didn\u2019t want to burden you or Leon. That\u2019s why I pulled away. That man you saw\u2014he was a lawyer. I\u2019ve been preparing my will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her confession pierced me. Guilt washed over me like a flood\u2014I had thought the worst of her while she had been suffering in silence.<\/p>\n

But then the doctor walked in with unexpected news.
