Lucas smiled wryly at her. \u201cWow, you make it sound like I was hopeless,\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maria playfully slapped his arm. \u201cYou know what I mean. I was only sixteen\u2026still a child myself. It was hard becoming a mom so young, and I know I made plenty of mistakes, but you\u2019re my pride and joy, Lucas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lucas kissed Maria\u2019s cheek and then ruffled her hair. They had an odd relationship since he\u2019d been raised in his grandparents\u2019 house while she finished high school and community college. At one point, they\u2019d been simultaneously getting ready for school together, almost like siblings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to miss you.\u201d Maria sighed. \u201cI\u2019m happy you have a job already, but I wish you were staying here, not moving to the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be back to visit. It\u2019s only an hour\u2019s drive, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maria smiled at him as they walked arm-in-arm across the college\u2019s manicured lawns. The sun shone down, and the air smelled fresh and sweet. It was the perfect day for Lucas to start the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

Five years later, Maria walked through the glass sliding doors of the big company where she\u2019d recently been hired. Although she was forty years old now, Maria had dedicated so much of her youth to raising Lucas that she felt like life was beginning again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That feeling hit her particularly hard when she was introduced to her new boss, Allen. Electric heat pulsed through her when she shook his hand, and she couldn\u2019t tear her gaze off his handsome face.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to have you on board, Maria,\u201d Allen said. \u201cI loved your resume, and I have a feeling you\u2019re exactly what we\u2019ve been missing around here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Allen grinned, and Maria melted. She didn\u2019t hear a word of what he said next as she admired the neat trim of his beard and the way his arms moved beneath the fabric of his shirt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cLet me show you to your office,\u201d Allen continued. \u201cYou\u2019re right next to me, so I can keep a close eye on you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He winked at her, and Maria\u2019s heart somersaulted. She had to get a grip on herself! She stopped herself from ogling his rear as she followed him down the glossy tiled corridor. Maria didn\u2019t want to get caught up in a workplace romance. Too many of her friends had been burned that way, and she didn\u2019t want to become one of them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It started with shy smiles and casual jokes over morning coffee. On the days when they worked on proposals together, their legs often brushed beneath the table. None of it was serious until the day Allen called Maria into his office to update her on a big project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI prefer to keep my business and personal lives separate,\u201d He mumbled, running his fingers through his hair. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry, but I think we can both walk away from this with newfound wisdom. Everyone makes mistakes, right? Of course, I\u2019ll pay for the termination.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Anger cast a dark shadow across Allen\u2019s face. \u201cYou need to be smart about this, Maria. Following through with this pregnancy will be a big mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe only mistake here is you.\u201d Maria strode toward the door. She couldn\u2019t believe she\u2019d been dumped by the father of her child for the second time in her life!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The following months brought some of the darkest days in Maria\u2019s life. The look her parents exchanged when she told them she\u2019d been left with a baby again broke her heart. She couldn\u2019t bear to tell Lucas he was about to become a brother either. He looked so happy on his social media pages\u2026how could she burst that bubble with this news?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBy the time I\u2019m finished with them, that jerk boss of yours will never be able to get another job.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

She couldn\u2019t talk to him at all, not even about work-related topics. He\u2019d brush her off and say she should send an email, which he usually ignored. His attitude only became worse when Maria started showing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cCongratulations!\u201d Amy from accounting took Maria\u2019s hand. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize you were married. When\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe Johnson proposal needs to be finished today.\u201d Allen appeared out of nowhere and hustled Maria back to her office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to say anything about us,\u201d Maria muttered to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe office is a place for work, not small talk!\u201d Allen snapped as his face turned blood red.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Allen did nothing to lighten Maria\u2019s workload as her due date approached. Instead, he piled on work and often made snide comments about how she\u2019d brought this on herself. The following Monday, Maria got a nasty shock. Her company called to tell her that she\u2019d been fired! She\u2019d never reworked the proposal Allen was shouting at her about when she went into labor, so he\u2019d fired her for poor performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lucas\u2019s chest tightened with rage while Maria told him everything that had happened to her. His blood was boiling when she finished, and his hands were curled into fists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cLucas, don\u2019t.\u201d Mom hung her head. \u201cI couldn\u2019t live with the scandal this will cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI won\u2019t let him get away with treating you like this, Mom. Besides, I\u2019m a big brother now. It\u2019s my job to protect that little guy.\u201d Lucas hugged his mother tightly and kissed his brother\u2019s forehead. \u201cBut I promise I\u2019ll be discrete. Just leave everything to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re about to get the surprise of your life, Allen,\u201d Lucas muttered as he entered the elevator.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

An hour later, Lucas sat alone in the back of a boardroom. Every seat at the conference table in the center of the room was occupied by shareholders and top company executives, except one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

All eyes turned to Allen when he entered the room. He apologized for being late and seemed confused when everyone continued to stare at him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIs something wrong?\u201d Allen asked as he took his seat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cTake a look at the documents in front of you, Mr. Walsh,\u201d the company CEO said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been accused of illegal job termination.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Allen blanched as he looked through the documents. \u201cThis is a lie! I fired that woman because she was lazy and sloppy. Her getting knocked up had nothing to do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A collective gasp traveled around the boardroom. Allen\u2019s face turned bright red.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNot only are you guilty of illegal termination, you\u2019re also guilty of gross misconduct. That\u2019s the real reason you want to fire my mother, isn\u2019t it? You\u2019re scared your dirty little secret will come out. A judge will find this very interesting when I take you to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Allen hung his head. He didn\u2019t say anything more, and he didn\u2019t need to. The guilt was written across his face for all to see.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
