Margaret Hamilton, Apollo Pioneer Who Helped Put Humans on the Moon, Dies at 90

Margaret Elaine Hamilton, the pioneering computer scientist who led the development of onboard flight software for NASA’s Apollo missions, has died at 90.

Hamilton died on September 30, 2026, at a hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her daughter, Lauren Hamilton, confirmed her death to The Associated Press. Her work helped make humanity’s first journeys to the moon possible and earned her lasting recognition as a trailblazer for women in science. apnews.com

A Crucial Role in the Moon Landing

At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Instrumentation Laboratory, Hamilton led the software engineering team responsible for the Apollo spacecraft’s onboard flight software.

The importance of that work became clear during Apollo 11’s descent to the lunar surface in July 1969. When the guidance computer became overloaded and issued alarms, the software’s ability to prioritize essential tasks allowed the landing to continue. Hamilton’s team helped build the reliability needed for astronauts to operate safely under extraordinary pressure. nasa.gov

From Mathematics to Space Exploration

Born in Paoli, Indiana, in 1936, Hamilton studied mathematics at Earlham College, graduating in 1958. She began working at MIT the following year, entering computing when the profession was still taking shape.

Her career developed alongside the technology itself. She became an influential advocate for treating software development as a rigorous engineering discipline, helping establish standards for work on which human lives could depend. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Recognition Beyond Apollo

After her years at MIT, Hamilton founded software companies and continued developing approaches to reliable computer systems.

In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing her leadership in creating the software behind NASA’s Apollo missions and her contribution to the development of software engineering. news.mit.edu

An Enduring Legacy

A photograph of Hamilton standing beside a towering stack of printed Apollo software became one of the most recognizable images of the space program’s behind-the-scenes work. It also introduced her achievements to generations who had grown up long after the moon landings.

Hamilton leaves a legacy of technical ingenuity, determination and leadership. Her career demonstrated the vital role of software in space exploration while opening possibilities for women entering science and engineering.
