The night I got the text from Mom about a \u201cspecial family dinner,\u201d I nearly choked on my microwaved ramen. It had been ages since we\u2019d all sat down together, and even longer since it felt like my parents actually wanted me there.<\/p>\n

I love my family, but being the middle child is like being the bologna in a sandwich where everyone\u2019s fighting over the bread.<\/p>\n

I stared at my phone, thumb hovering over the keyboard. Part of me wanted to make up some lame excuse, but then I thought about Tina and Cameron\u2014my perfect older sister and my can-do-no-wrong little brother. They\u2019d be there, basking in Mom and Dad\u2019s approval, like always. If I didn\u2019t show, I\u2019d remain the perpetual afterthought.<\/p>\n

\u201cCount me in,\u201d I typed, hitting send before I could change my mind.<\/p>\n

Mom replied instantly: \u201cGreat! Le Petit Ch\u00e2teau, 7 p.m. next Friday. Don\u2019t be late!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Le Petit Ch\u00e2teau. Fancy. I whistled low, already tallying my savings. Maybe things were changing. Maybe, for once, they wanted me<\/em>, Jennifer the Forgettable.<\/p>\n

That Friday, I arrived ten minutes early, nerves jangling. Just as I was about to step in, Mom and Dad appeared. Mom was all smiles; Dad, his usual worried self. Inside, we found a table, and soon Tina arrived\u2014stunning as always, making me feel like a potato in comparison. Cameron waltzed in last, blaming traffic.<\/p>\n

The meal began with the familiar hierarchy: Mom asking about Tina\u2019s son, Dad laughing at Cameron\u2019s jokes. When Mom finally turned to me, her words cut.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Jennifer,\u201d she said, peering over her menu, \u201chow\u2019s work? Still at that little marketing firm?\u201d<\/p>\n

It stung. But the food was good, and for a moment, we laughed like we used to. I let myself hope.<\/p>\n

Dad scanned it, then looked at me. \u201cJennifer, you\u2019ll be covering your portion tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re an adult now,\u201d he said evenly. \u201cIt\u2019s time you paid your own way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026 this is a family dinner. You\u2019re paying for everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTina and Cameron have families to support. You\u2019re single. It\u2019s only fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fair.<\/em> The word mocked me. My throat tightened, but I slid my card to the waiter, praying it wouldn\u2019t decline.<\/p>\n

Driving home, humiliation curdled into anger. By morning, I\u2019d made a decision. I wasn\u2019t letting this go.<\/p>\n

I invited Mom and Dad over for dinner. I scrubbed my apartment until it gleamed, bought candles, splurged on salmon, roasted vegetables, quinoa salad, even tiramisu. By the time the doorbell rang, I was calm. Focused. Ready.<\/p>\n

Dinner was perfect. Mom marveled at my cooking, Dad praised my apartment. For once, everything felt balanced. Until dessert.<\/p>\n

As I set down the plates, I smiled sweetly. \u201cI\u2019m glad you enjoyed the meal. That\u2019ll be $47.50 each.\u201d<\/p>\n

Understanding flickered, followed quickly by shame.<\/p>\n

Dad cleared his throat. \u201cJennifer, that\u2019s not\u2014 we didn\u2019t mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t mean what?\u201d I snapped, years of silence cracking open. \u201cDidn\u2019t mean to make me feel like I\u2019m worth less than Tina or Cameron? Didn\u2019t mean to always overlook me? Or didn\u2019t mean to get called out?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom reached for my hand. \u201cSweetie, we had no idea you felt this way.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed, bitter and sharp. \u201cOf course you didn\u2019t. You\u2019ve never looked closely enough to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
