After his wife’s funeral, Artyom brought home a young woman.

“This is Elya. She will be your new mother,” he said.

“Dad… Are you serious? Are you out of your mind?”

“How could you do this to me and Mom?”

“Denis, how can you say that? I am not a traitor or a murderer, as you probably think. Life has to continue.”

“Life?”

“You didn’t even wait for the earth to settle on her coffin! Maybe you were the customer too? Look how quickly the space became available!”

“Denis!”

Artyom raised his voice sharply.

“The police found the murderer. Why are you saying this?”

“And I’ll look for the customer.”

“I’ll get my certificate, go to law school, and then I’ll see this case through to the end. And you’ll pay for everything.”

“What’s wrong with you?”

“I’m grieving for your mother too. But we can’t stand still.”

“I’ve had a relationship with Elya for a long time.”

“She is a stranger to me. And let her live anywhere, but not here. I don’t want to see this crow that came to peck at my family.”

“Get out of the room, Denis,” his father said loudly.

Denis didn’t argue anymore. He turned away and walked out, but before closing the door, he looked once more at Elya. Something about her expression bothered him. She wasn’t crying, apologizing, or even defending herself. She simply stood there, pale and silent, as if she already knew that something far more dangerous than Denis’s anger was waiting for them.

“Artyom, I told you—it was too early to bring me here.”

“You failed with Denis. He will never accept me. It would have been better if you sent him to your parents.”

“No,” Artyom answered decisively.

“We will live together.”

“All three of us. Over time, you will get used to each other. This is not up for discussion.”

Four years passed, and Eleanor thought about having a child more and more often.

She wanted the sound of children’s laughter to return to the house. She imagined a small crib in the spare room, tiny clothes hanging in the wardrobe, and little footsteps running through the hallway that had become unbearably quiet after Artyom’s first wife died.

But nothing happened for her and Artyom.

“Elka, let’s wait,” her husband urged. “We have everything ahead of us. We are healthy; we just need time.”

But Eleanor did not believe in “time.”

The longer she waited, the more frightened she became that her dream of becoming a mother would never come true. And beneath that fear was another, darker thought—if she did not give Artyom a child soon, perhaps he would eventually begin to question why she had entered his life so quickly after his first wife’s death.

She told her friend about her fears.

“Then take a child from someone else,” her friend suggested without a shadow of surprise.

“For example, from Stas, my common-law husband. Handsome, healthy, goes to the gym—everything is fine.”

“But Artyom can do a test and find out.”

“Then think for yourself. Just don’t delay. While you’re young and beautiful, you have an opportunity to keep your place beside him.”

Eleanor fell silent.

The suggestion horrified her at first, but the more she thought about it, the more dangerous and tempting it became. She began convincing herself that one secret could solve everything—that a child would make Artyom love her permanently and would silence every doubt he might ever have.

She made her own plans.

That evening, Eleanor was waiting for her husband at home, but he unexpectedly called and said that he had to urgently leave for the distant Moscow region.

Denis showed up late that night. Eleanor also went upstairs.

She waited for a moment, listening to the silence in the house. Then she quietly entered his room. Seeing Denis returning from the shower, she slowly approached him and put her arms around his shoulders.

At that moment, neither of them was thinking about the consequences. Denis was consumed by anger, grief, and years of resentment toward his father and the woman he blamed for everything that had happened to his family. Eleanor, meanwhile, had convinced herself that she was taking one final step toward securing her future.

The morning began with silence and the terrible realization of what had happened.

They woke up in Denis’s bed.

“What will happen now?” Eleanor whispered.

“Nothing has changed,” Denis answered coldly.

“You wanted it, and I didn’t refuse. As a stepmother, you are indifferent to me, but as a woman, you are attractive. But nothing more.”

“I have a girlfriend. We just haven’t gotten to that point yet. If you want this again, that’s your choice. But for now, go home.”

“I don’t need problems with my father right now.”

When her husband was away on business for long periods, Eleanor and Denis continued meeting in secret.

Every time Artyom left the house, Eleanor became bolder. Denis remained emotionally distant, but he did not stop her. Neither of them realized that their secret was becoming a chain around their necks, and sooner or later, someone would pull it tight.

Then Eleanor became pregnant.

“Most likely, yes,” Denis said after she told him. He stared at the floor for several seconds before asking, “After all this time—and just like that… What are you going to do?”

“I’ll tell Artyom.”

“He won’t check, right?”

“Maybe he won’t. And if he does decide to check, then you’ll have problems.”

“That won’t happen. We had him examined. He’s sure he’s healthy.”

“He’ll think it’s just a coincidence.”

Eleanor listened, but the confidence in her face slowly disappeared.

“What should I do now?” she whispered.

“I think you should have an abortion. I won’t advise you anything else. And I don’t want you myself.”

“Not as a wife. Not as a stepmother. Not as anything.”

“No,” she said firmly.

“I’ll give birth. And I’ll tell Artyom the truth. The children are yours, but he’ll never know.”

“He won’t dare throw me out.”

“It’s your business,” Denis shrugged.

“And I’m not going to marry you. I won’t protect you either. You’re a liar and an adventurer.”

“If you give birth, let it be on your conscience. Just don’t hope that my father will ever acknowledge these children as his own.”

When Artyom came back home, she planned to tell him everything. She had rehearsed the confession in her head dozens of times.

But fate directed otherwise.

The next day, she received a call from the police.

“Your husband has been arrested.”

“He has been arrested in connection with the murder of your mother-in-law.”

Eleanor froze.

For several seconds, she could not even breathe.

Then the officer said something that made the room seem to tilt beneath her feet.

“Your husband has been charged with arranging the murder. He also identified the person who allegedly ordered it.”

Eleanor’s hands began to shake.

“Who?”

There was a pause.

“Artyom.”

For a moment, Eleanor could not understand.

Artyom—the man who had brought her into the house after his wife’s funeral, the man who had insisted they were all going to become a family—was now accused of having arranged his own wife’s murder.

But the police had not finished.

They told her that evidence had been discovered suggesting that the murder had not been a random act. Money had changed hands. Calls had been made. Someone had been watching the victim before her death.

Artyom ended up behind bars, and Eleanor remained in the house.

At first, Denis wanted her to leave.

He blamed her for everything. He believed that she had entered their family like a stranger and had destroyed whatever remained of it. But then he learned that Eleanor was pregnant.

He could not bring himself to throw her out.

Instead, he took control of the business that Denis had inherited from his mother and began managing everything while the investigation continued.

But he did not trust Eleanor.

Not for a second.

He knew she had lied before. He knew she had hidden her relationship with him. And now that his father was in prison for allegedly arranging his mother’s murder, Denis had begun wondering whether Eleanor knew more than she had admitted.

So he decided to play it safe.

He hired a private security company to install hidden surveillance cameras throughout the house. The cameras were concealed in places no ordinary person would notice. On the day Denis took Eleanor shopping, the technicians completed the final maintenance work.

Eleanor knew nothing about them.

At first, Denis found nothing.

He watched recordings late at night, sometimes for hours. Eleanor behaved naturally. She cooked, cleaned, spoke to her friend on the phone, and spent most of her time resting because of the pregnancy.

She never seemed nervous.

She never appeared to be hiding anything.

Then, one evening, Denis saw Eleanor talking to her friend in the living room.

“How are you doing?” her friend asked.

Eleanor sighed.

“I’m crazy about Denis. This is my first true love.”

Denis stopped the recording.

He watched again.

“I’d like to be happy with him and give birth to these babies,” Eleanor continued. “But he’s still cold to me.”

Her friend laughed softly.

“My friend only advised me to be patient.”

“If he feels good being with you, the rest will come with time.”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“So you chose him… out of desperation?”

“That’s right.”

“But I never wished your mother ill. And he never promised me anything.”

Denis leaned back in his chair.

For the first time, he realized that Eleanor might not have been the monster he had imagined.

But then another thought struck him.

If she had never wished his mother harm, why had she been so desperate to enter their family?

And if she had truly wanted Denis, why had she never told him before becoming pregnant?

The answers frightened him more than the questions.

Denis watched several more recordings.

He discovered that Eleanor had secretly kept old documents belonging to Artyom. He saw her looking through them late at night, sometimes with tears in her eyes. On another recording, she stood alone in the hallway and stared at a framed photograph of Denis’s mother for several minutes.

Then she whispered something the microphone barely captured.

“I’m sorry.”

Denis froze.

Sorry for what?

He rewound the recording again and again, but the rest of the words were impossible to hear.

From that moment on, Denis stopped thinking only about his relationship with Eleanor.

He began investigating his father’s case himself.

He discovered that his mother had been afraid during the final months of her life. She had told a friend that someone was following her. She had also begun keeping copies of financial documents outside the house.

And one name appeared repeatedly in the records.

Artyom.

But there was something else.

The payments connected to the murder had not come directly from Artyom’s accounts.

They had passed through a company Denis had never heard of.

A company registered several years earlier under a different name.

And the person listed as its director was not Artyom.

It was someone much closer to the family.

Denis stared at the document for a long time before whispering the name.

“Stas.”

The man Eleanor’s friend had suggested as a possible biological father of her future child.

Suddenly, everything seemed connected.

Eleanor’s strange behavior.

Her desperation to become pregnant.

Her secret conversations.

Stas’s unexpected interest in the family.

And the murder.

Denis confronted Eleanor that same night.

“Tell me the truth.”

She looked at him, confused.

“About what?”

“About Stas.”

The color drained from her face.

“What does he have to do with anything?”

“Everything, maybe.”

Denis placed the documents on the table.

“I know about the company. I know about the payments. And I know someone has been moving money through Stas.”

Eleanor stared at the papers.

Then she began to cry.

“I didn’t know.”

“You’re lying again.”

“No.”

She shook her head desperately.

“I swear to you, Denis, I never knew.”

“Then tell me why you were afraid.”

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“Because I was afraid that if I told Artyom the truth about the children, he would hate me. I thought he would throw me out. I thought I had ruined everything.”

“And Stas?”

“I never loved him.”

“Then why did you listen to your friend?”

“Because I was desperate.”

Denis remained silent.

Eleanor finally looked up.

“I made terrible choices. I lied. I betrayed you. I betrayed Artyom. But I did not kill your mother.”

“Then who did?”

Eleanor wiped her tears.

“I don’t know.”

At that exact moment, Denis’s phone rang.

It was the police.

They had discovered new evidence.

A second suspect had been identified.

And there was a possibility that Artyom had not acted alone—or might not have been the person who ordered the murder at all.

The investigation was reopened.

Days later, Stas was arrested after investigators traced the money to an account connected to him. Under questioning, he eventually admitted that he had been involved in the financial scheme, but he insisted he had never personally ordered the murder.

He then revealed something even more disturbing.

Someone had been paying him.

Someone who wanted Artyom blamed for everything.

When Denis heard the name, his blood ran cold.

It was someone he had trusted for years.

The truth finally came out in pieces.

Artyom had been hiding financial problems, but he had not ordered his wife’s murder. He had lied to the police at first because he had been protecting someone, and that lie had nearly destroyed him.

The real organizer had manipulated several people, moving money through shell companies and using Artyom’s private conflicts as a perfect cover.

By the time the investigation was complete, Artyom was cleared of the murder charge, although he still had to answer for the other crimes connected to the financial scheme.

Denis never forgot what had happened to his mother.

He never forgave his father completely.

And he certainly did not forget what Eleanor had done.

But when the twins were born—a girl and a boy—something inside him changed.

For the first time in his life, Denis held his children in his arms and understood that he did not want them to inherit the hatred, secrets, and bitterness that had poisoned their family.

At first, he treated Eleanor with caution.

They lived together because of the children, but their relationship remained fragile.

Then, slowly, things began to change.

Eleanor stopped lying.

Denis stopped searching for reasons to punish her.

They learned how to speak without shouting, how to disagree without destroying each other, and how to protect their children from the painful history that had brought them into the world.

One night, when the twins were sleeping peacefully, Denis lay beside his wife and stared into the darkness for a long time.

“Elka…”

She turned toward him.

“I’ve loved you for a long time.”

Eleanor remained silent.

“I just didn’t want to admit it to myself. I was angry with you. I blamed you for things you didn’t do. And maybe I was afraid that if I admitted I loved you, I’d have to forgive you.”

A tear slipped down Eleanor’s cheek.

“I never deserved your forgiveness,” she whispered.

“Maybe not.”

Denis reached for her hand.

“But our children deserve a family that isn’t built on hatred.”

Eleanor smiled through her tears and closed her eyes.

“I felt it,” she whispered. “Even when you hated me, I felt that there was something between us.”

“I can’t imagine my life without you anymore.”

Outside the window, the first light of morning appeared.

For years, their house had been filled with death, suspicion, lies, and secrets.

Now, for the first time, there was another sound.

The quiet laughter of a child waking in the next room.

Denis looked toward the door and smiled.

Their past could never be erased.

His mother’s death could never be undone.

And some wounds would never completely disappear.

But Denis finally understood something his father had once tried to tell him.

Life did continue.

Not because the past didn’t matter.

But because sometimes the only way to survive it was to uncover the truth, face the consequences, and choose what kind of future would come after it.
