I accidentally left my receipt at the self-checkout machine. I had already pushed my cart halfway toward the exit when a woman suddenly rushed after me, holding the receipt between two fingers. She caught up with me near the automatic doors and handed it over with a polite smile. “You dropped this,” she said. I thanked her, barely giving the receipt a second glance, and headed to my car. I remember noticing that she seemed unusually nervous, but I assumed she was simply in a hurry. I drove home without thinking about her again.

When I got home and unpacked the groceries, I noticed something odd. The receipt was still in my pocket, but when I turned it over, there was a message written across the back in hurried handwriting: “Check your tires. Someone slashed mine in this parking lot.” My stomach dropped. I immediately thought of the woman who had returned the receipt to me. Had she noticed something I hadn’t? I ran outside, expecting everything to be fine, but the moment I crouched beside my car, my heart began pounding. One of my tires had indeed been slashed. The cut was clean and deliberate, not the kind of damage that could have happened accidentally. I called the police, and when an officer arrived, he inspected the tire and told me there had been a string of similar incidents in the area. Several shoppers had discovered damaged tires after leaving the same parking lot, usually late in the afternoon when the store was busiest.

Then the officer asked me something that made the entire situation feel much more frightening. “Did anyone approach you while you were leaving?” I told him about the woman and showed him the message she had written. He studied it carefully before asking if I remembered where she had been standing. I pointed toward the direction of the store, and he immediately requested the parking-lot security footage. A few hours later, the police contacted me again. The cameras showed a person moving between parked cars, apparently targeting vehicles, but the footage also showed something else: the woman who had returned my receipt had noticed the damage to her own car and had deliberately followed me because she believed whoever had slashed her tire might have been watching nearby. She had warned several other shoppers that day, too. The police eventually identified a suspect connected to the earlier incidents. What still unsettles me is how close I came to driving away without ever checking my tires. That tiny handwritten warning on the back of an ordinary grocery receipt may have prevented me from becoming the next victim—and I still think about the woman who took the time to warn a stranger.
