Catherine Ringer Dies at 68: Les Rita Mitsouko\u2019s Unmistakable Voice Leaves an Enduring Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Catherine Ringer, the celebrated French singer whose fearless vocals and theatrical performances defined the influential pop-rock duo Les Rita Mitsouko, has died at the age of 68.<\/p>\n

Ringer died during the night of September 14 following a rapidly progressing form of cancer, her children confirmed in a statement shared with Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n

Her death marks the end of an extraordinary career that transformed French popular music through a daring blend of rock, pop, funk, electronic sounds and chanson.<\/p>\n

From Artistic Beginnings to Les Rita Mitsouko<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in Suresnes, France, in 1957, Ringer explored several forms of artistic expression before meeting guitarist and composer Fred Chichin in 1979. Their personal and creative partnership led to the formation of Rita Mitsouko, which later became known as Les Rita Mitsouko.<\/p>\n

The duo quickly distinguished itself with an unconventional sound, flamboyant visual identity and highly theatrical live performances. Refusing to remain within a single genre, they combined energetic rock arrangements with electronic rhythms, funk influences and distinctly French songwriting.<\/p>\n

Their breakthrough came in the mid-1980s with \u201cMarcia Ba\u00efla,\u201d a colorful yet deeply moving tribute to Argentine dancer and choreographer Marcia Moretto. The song became one of the defining French pop recordings of the decade and introduced the duo to a much wider audience.<\/p>\n

Other acclaimed songs followed, including \u201cAndy,\u201d \u201cC\u2019est comme \u00e7a\u201d and \u201cLes Histoires d\u2019A.\u201d Their inventive music videos, eccentric costumes and unpredictable performances made them recognizable far beyond France.<\/p>\n

An Extraordinary Creative Partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ringer\u2019s powerful, expressive voice and magnetic stage presence formed the emotional center of Les Rita Mitsouko. Chichin\u2019s songwriting, guitar work and production instincts complemented her theatrical style, creating a partnership unlike anything else in French music.<\/p>\n

Together, they released a series of influential albums, including Rita Mitsouko<\/em>, The No Comprendo<\/em>, Marc & Robert<\/em>, Syst\u00e8me D<\/em>, Cool Fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie<\/em>, La Femme Trombone<\/em> and Vari\u00e9ty<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The duo also worked with prominent international artists. Celebrated producer Tony Visconti contributed to two of their albums, while Sparks and Iggy Pop were among the musicians who collaborated with them.<\/p>\n

Carrying On After Fred Chichin\u2019s Death<\/strong><\/p>\n

The partnership came to a tragic end in November 2007 when Chichin died from cancer at the age of 53.<\/p>\n

Ringer continued performing after his death, keeping their shared musical legacy alive while also establishing herself as a successful solo artist. She regularly returned to the Les Rita Mitsouko catalog in concert, presenting its songs to new generations while pursuing fresh projects and collaborations under her own name.<\/p>\n

She remained active until the final year of her life, performing in Paris in February 2026 and planning further appearances featuring the music she and Chichin had created together.<\/p>\n

A Fearless and Original Voice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over more than four decades, Catherine Ringer became one of the most distinctive figures in French popular music. Her unmistakable voice, artistic independence and refusal to follow convention inspired generations of musicians and listeners.<\/p>\n

Her performances could be playful, provocative, eccentric and intensely emotional\u2014sometimes within the same song. That unpredictability became an essential part of her appeal and helped make Les Rita Mitsouko one of France\u2019s most original musical acts.<\/p>\n

Her family remembered her as a major French artist whose songs, freedom and individuality influenced several generations.<\/p>\n

Ringer is survived by her three children. Her music with Fred Chichin remains an enduring and singular contribution to modern French pop and rock.<\/p>\n
