He was 80.<\/p>\n<p>Charters died suddenly in Amsterdam on September 13, according to the American Society of Cinematographers. Further details surrounding his death were not immediately disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Visual Force Behind \u201824\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charters was best known for his extensive contribution to Fox\u2019s action thriller <em>24<\/em>. He served as director of photography on 184 episodes during the show\u2019s eight-season original run and also directed three episodes.<\/p>\n<p>His dynamic camerawork, urgent compositions and use of handheld photography helped create the tense, fast-moving visual language that became one of the series\u2019 defining features.<\/p>\n<p>His work on <em>24<\/em> earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series, in 2005 and 2006. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.televisionacademy.com\/bios\/rodney-charters\">The Television Academy<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Work on \u2018Shameless\u2019 and Other Television Dramas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Beyond <em>24<\/em>, Charters served as a cinematographer on numerous prominent television productions. His credits included Showtime\u2019s <em>Shameless<\/em>, <em>Nashville<\/em>, <em>Dallas<\/em>, <em>Nash Bridges<\/em> and the reboot of <em>Magnum P.I.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His film work included <em>Going in Style<\/em>, <em>They Die by Dawn<\/em> and <em>Juju Music<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Charters was respected not only for his technical expertise but also for his ability to use lighting, framing and camera movement to support a story without distracting from it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Career That Spanned Continents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Raised in New Zealand as the son of a small-town photographer, Charters developed an interest in filmmaking at an early age. While attending the University of Auckland, he made the black-and-white short <em>Film Exercise<\/em>, which screened at the Sydney Film Festival and helped him secure a place at London\u2019s Royal College of Art.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating, he worked in commercials before embarking on an international career that took him to locations ranging from the jungles of South America to the Soviet Union during the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>Charters eventually transitioned into dramatic productions and worked in Toronto and Vancouver before moving to the United States for the first season of <em>Nash Bridges<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dcsonline.org\/news\/dcs-mourns-the-passing-of-rodney-charters-asc\/\">Digital Cinema Society<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Honored by the Cinematography Community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charters became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 2004. He also belonged to the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and the New Zealand Cinematographers Society.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the ASC honored him with its Career Achievement in Television Award, recognizing his lasting contribution to the visual art of television.<\/p>\n<p>He was also known for generously sharing his experience at filmmaking workshops, industry events and technology presentations.
