Amber Eggers Dies: ‘Love After Lockup’ Star Was 41

Amber Eggers, the reality television personality known for appearing on WE tv’s Love After Lockup and its spinoff Life After Lockup, has died. She was 41.

Eggers died on Thursday, September 3, at a hospital in Atlanta after suffering acute liver failure, according to her mother, Monica Eggers. She had reportedly been admitted several days earlier after feeling unwell, but her condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite doctors’ efforts, they were unable to keep her heart beating. Deadline and People reported the news.

Her death followed a prolonged period of serious health problems, including pneumonia, sepsis, organ failure and what she later described as a “mini-stroke.”

A Memorable Reality Television Personality

Eggers rose to national attention when she joined Love After Lockup in 2019. The popular reality series follows couples attempting to build relationships after one partner is released from prison.

Viewers were introduced to Eggers after she had served approximately four years in prison on a drug-trafficking conviction. Her relationship with Vincent Gonzalez, which began while she was incarcerated, became one of the season’s central storylines.

Gonzalez proposed to Eggers, and she initially accepted. However, the connection they had developed through letters and conversations did not translate smoothly into life outside prison. Their relationship eventually ended following her release.

Eggers’ willingness to reveal the difficult and uncomfortable parts of her life helped make her a recognizable member of the franchise. Her story was about more than romance. It also explored rebuilding a life after incarceration, repairing relationships and confronting the consequences of past decisions.

Her Complicated Bond With “Puppy” Deaton

One of Eggers’ most significant relationships on television was with her former cellmate Michelle “Puppy” Deaton. The two women met while incarcerated and formed an exceptionally close bond.

Their emotionally complicated relationship was featured on Love After Lockup before continuing on the spinoff series Life After Lockup. At different points, Eggers and Deaton considered whether their friendship might develop into a romantic relationship.

They ultimately pursued relationships with other people, but their connection remained an important part of their lives and the show.

Deaton previously spoke about how much Eggers’ support meant to her during some of her most difficult moments.

“Whenever I didn’t love myself, Amber was there to love me,” Deaton said during the series, adding that she did not believe she would have survived certain experiences without Eggers.

Their story resonated with viewers because it did not fit neatly into a conventional category. It included love, loyalty, arguments, disappointment and an enduring concern for one another.

Serious Health Struggles

Eggers had been facing significant medical challenges before her death.

In the spring of 2025, she was hospitalized after developing severe pneumonia and a bacterial infection in her bloodstream. Her sister, Erin, subsequently organized a fundraising campaign to assist with mounting medical expenses.

According to the family, the infection progressed to sepsis and multiple-organ failure. Eggers was placed on life support as doctors fought to save her.

She survived that critical episode and eventually improved enough to leave intensive care. However, her recovery was difficult. She needed physical therapy to regain her strength and learn to walk properly again.

Eggers later disclosed that she had suffered what she called a “mini-stroke,” presenting yet another challenge during an already grueling recovery.

Friends remembered her as a determined fighter who had survived circumstances that might have overwhelmed many others. One tribute shared following her death noted that she had endured life support, organ failure and a long rehabilitation before eventually returning home.

Her final hospitalization reportedly began after she started feeling unwell. She was diagnosed with liver failure, and her health continued to decline despite medical intervention.

Friends and Fans Pay Tribute

News of Eggers’ death prompted an outpouring of condolences from friends, viewers and followers of the Love After Lockup franchise.

Many remembered her strength and determination, particularly after learning about the severity of her recent medical battles. Others reflected on the vulnerability she displayed while documenting her life after incarceration.

Although reality television often focuses on conflict and dramatic confrontations, Eggers’ appearances also showed the difficult process of trying to begin again. She allowed audiences to see her mistakes, fears, complicated relationships and efforts to create a more stable future.

Her story demonstrated that leaving prison does not immediately erase the obstacles a person faces. Eggers had to navigate broken trust, emotional attachments, public scrutiny and the practical difficulties of rebuilding her life—all while television cameras followed her journey.

That honesty, even when it exposed painful or unflattering moments, made her story memorable to longtime viewers.

A Life Marked by Survival

Eggers’ life included hardship, controversy and serious health complications, but those close to her emphasized her resilience.

She survived incarceration, attempted to rebuild her relationships and later fought her way back from sepsis and multiple-organ failure. Her recovery required enormous physical and emotional strength, and friends said she continued fighting until her body could no longer endure the strain.

For audiences who followed her story across Love After Lockup and Life After Lockup, Eggers will be remembered as a candid and complicated personality who shared deeply personal parts of her life with the public.

Amber Eggers was 41. Information concerning memorial or funeral arrangements had not been publicly announced at the time of publication.
