Steinem married environmental and animal-rights activist David Bale, the father of actor Christian Bale, in 2000. She was 66 at the time.<\/p>\n

Their marriage lasted until Bale died from brain lymphoma in 2003.<\/p>\n

Steinem had previously questioned the unequal traditions associated with marriage but explained that the institution had changed substantially by the time she chose to marry.<\/p>\n

She had no biological children but became a stepmother to Bale\u2019s four children.<\/p>\n
