A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

For more than six decades, Steinem used journalism, public speaking and political organizing to challenge gender inequality and advocate for reproductive freedom, equal pay, racial justice and greater representation for women in American public life.

Her death marks the end of an extraordinary career that helped transform conversations about women’s rights in the United States and around the world.

A Defining Voice of Modern Feminism

With her signature aviator glasses and center-parted hair, Steinem became one of the most recognizable faces of the American feminist movement during the late 1960s and 1970s.

However, her influence extended far beyond her public image. She was a skilled journalist, an energetic organizer and a gifted speaker who could translate complex political issues into language that connected with ordinary people.

Steinem traveled extensively throughout her life, speaking at universities, community centers, political gatherings, rallies and women’s conferences. She consistently argued that gender equality could not be separated from racial, economic and social justice.

Although she was frequently described as the leader or symbol of the women’s movement, Steinem often emphasized that feminism was a collective struggle rather than the work of any one individual.

Early Life and Education

Gloria Marie Steinem was born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, to Ruth and Leo Steinem.

Her early childhood was unconventional. Her father worked as a traveling antiques dealer, and the family spent long periods moving around the country. After her parents separated, Steinem remained with her mother, whose struggles with mental illness deeply influenced her understanding of women’s vulnerability within social and economic systems.

She later attended Smith College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1956. Following college, Steinem spent time in India, an experience that helped shape her interest in grassroots organizing and nonviolent political action.

When she returned to the United States, she entered journalism at a time when women were often restricted to writing about fashion, relationships and domestic life.

The Investigation That Brought Her National Attention

Steinem attracted widespread attention in 1963 when she went undercover as a waitress at New York’s Playboy Club.

Her resulting two-part exposé, “A Bunny’s Tale,” documented the demanding working conditions, low wages, sexual expectations and strict appearance requirements faced by women employed as Playboy Bunnies.

The investigation established Steinem as a courageous journalist willing to expose exploitation from the inside. However, she later acknowledged that the assignment made it difficult for her to be taken seriously by some editors, who focused more on the Bunny costume than the substance of her reporting.

Despite those setbacks, Steinem continued writing about politics, culture and the treatment of women. She became a columnist for New York magazine and wrote extensively about the emerging women’s liberation movement.

Her 1969 essay “After Black Power, Women’s Liberation” helped establish her as a major national voice on feminism.

The Creation of Ms. Magazine

One of Steinem’s most enduring achievements was helping launch Ms. magazine.

The publication first appeared as a special issue of New York magazine in late 1971 before becoming an independent magazine in 1972. Its inaugural issue quickly attracted enormous public interest, demonstrating that there was a large audience for journalism centered on women’s lives, rights and experiences.

Ms. addressed subjects that many mainstream publications either ignored or treated superficially, including domestic violence, workplace discrimination, reproductive rights, childcare, sexual harassment and unequal pay.

The magazine also challenged traditional assumptions about marriage, motherhood, beauty and professional ambition. Its very name was significant: “Ms.” offered women a form of address that did not identify them according to their marital status.

Through Ms., Steinem and her fellow founding editors created a platform that reshaped American journalism and encouraged generations of women to tell their own stories.

Organizing Women for Political Power

Steinem’s activism was not confined to writing.

In 1971, she joined Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Myrlie Evers-Williams and other prominent leaders in establishing the National Women’s Political Caucus. The organization sought to increase women’s participation in politics and support female candidates seeking elected or appointed office.

She also helped establish the Women’s Action Alliance and the Ms. Foundation for Women, organizations designed to provide practical support to women and grassroots activists.

In 2005, Steinem joined Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan in co-founding the Women’s Media Center. The organization works to increase women’s visibility and influence across journalism and entertainment.

Steinem campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment and defended reproductive freedom throughout her life. She also spoke against racism, apartheid, war, female genital mutilation and discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities.

Rather than treating these struggles as separate causes, she viewed them as interconnected forms of inequality.

An Influential Author

In addition to her magazine work and political activism, Steinem wrote several influential books.

Her notable works included Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Revolution from Within, Moving Beyond Words and My Life on the Road.

Her writing combined personal experiences with political analysis, frequently examining how social expectations affected women’s confidence, independence and opportunities.

In My Life on the Road, published in 2015, Steinem reflected on decades spent traveling, organizing and listening to people from different communities. The memoir highlighted her belief that meaningful political movements grow through face-to-face conversations and local participation.

Her life and work also inspired documentaries, television productions and films. She was portrayed by multiple actresses in Julie Taymor’s 2020 biographical film The Glorias, while Rose Byrne played her in the television miniseries Mrs. America.

Presidential Medal of Freedom

Steinem received numerous awards and honors during her lifetime.

In 2013, President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. The award recognized her enormous contribution to the movement for equality and her role in inspiring women across several generations.

Even as she became one of feminism’s most celebrated figures, Steinem continued to describe herself primarily as an organizer and writer. She remained politically active well into her later years and participated in the Women’s March in Washington in 2017.

Personal Life

Steinem married environmental and animal-rights activist David Bale, the father of actor Christian Bale, in 2000. She was 66 at the time.

Their marriage lasted until Bale died from brain lymphoma in 2003.

Steinem had previously questioned the unequal traditions associated with marriage but explained that the institution had changed substantially by the time she chose to marry.

She had no biological children but became a stepmother to Bale’s four children.

Steinem was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1986 and later with trigeminal neuralgia. She continued writing, traveling and campaigning despite her health challenges.

A Legacy That Changed American Life

Gloria Steinem did not create the women’s movement alone, and she regularly credited the activists—particularly women of color—whose organizing preceded and accompanied her work. Nevertheless, few individuals played a greater role in bringing feminist ideas into mainstream American conversation.

She helped make previously hidden subjects publicly discussable. She encouraged women to question discrimination in their homes, workplaces, relationships and political institutions. Through journalism and activism, she helped build organizations that will continue working beyond her lifetime.

Steinem also inspired younger generations to view feminism not simply as a battle between women and men, but as a movement seeking freedom from restrictive roles for everyone.

Her influence can still be seen in debates over reproductive rights, workplace equality, political representation and gender-based violence.

Gloria Steinem leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a journalist who exposed injustice, an organizer who built enduring institutions and an activist who refused to stop pushing for equality.

Her death closes a remarkable chapter in American social history, but the movement she helped strengthen—and the conversations she helped begin—will continue.

Gloria Steinem Dies at 92: Feminist Icon, Activist and Co-Founder of Ms. Magazine Gloria Steinem, the groundbreaking journalist, author and activist who became one of the most influential figures in the modern women’s rights movement, has died at the age of 92.
