She was 69.<\/p>\n<p>News of her passing was shared by her family and team, who called her \u201ca beloved designer, artist, mentor, collaborator, and friend to so many throughout the theatre community and beyond\u201d. Her wife, producer and artistic director Robyn Goodman, said the cause was multiple myeloma, following a series of health setbacks that began with a horseback riding accident in Greece last year.<\/p>\n<p>### A career that built entire worlds<br \/>\nBorn June 24, 1957 in Marysville, California, Louizos first trained as an actor at Mills College and NYU before shifting to design in graduate school. She earned an MFA in Scenic Design from NYU Tisch.<\/p>\n<p>She began on Broadway as an associate scenic designer on The Red Shoes (1993), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1997), Taller Than a Dwarf and Uncle Vanya (2000), and also worked as art director for the Tony Awards and for eight episodes of HBO\u2019s Sex and the City.<\/p>\n<p>Louizos broke through as lead designer with the 2003 hit Avenue Q. Her shape-shifting, outer-borough street became the visual signature of the puppet musical and traveled to London, Las Vegas, national tours, and is in use again in a current West End revival.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to design more than two dozen Broadway productions, including:<br \/>\n&#8211; In the Heights \u2014 her Washington Heights block earned a Tony nomination in 2008. Lin-Manuel Miranda recalled audiences crying at seeing \u201ctheir own block\u201d on stage<br \/>\n&#8211; High Fidelity (2007) and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2013) \u2014 her other two Tony nominations for Best Scenic Design of a Musical<br \/>\n&#8211; School of Rock \u2013 The Musical_, Holiday Inn, Rodgers + Hammerstein\u2019s Cinderella, Honeymoon in Vegas, Dames at Sea, It Shoulda Been You, Curtains, White Christmas, Steel Magnolias, _Golda\u2019s Balcony and more.<\/p>\n<p>She also designed costumes for All About Me and School of Rock, and served as scenic designer for Encores! productions including 1776, Zorba, and Lady Be Good. Off-Broadway credits included Tick, Tick\u2026 BOOM!, Altar Boyz, and Sons of the Prophet. Louizos even appeared on screen as \u201cMichelle\u201d in Miranda\u2019s tick, tick\u2026 BOOM! (2021), a film of the musical she and Goodman had co-produced off-Broadway.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the stage, she received an Emmy nomination for art direction for the 47th Annual Tony Awards and multiple Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominations.<\/p>\n<p>### Community and legacy<br \/>\nFifteen years ago Louizos founded the Broadway Design Exchange, an online marketplace where designers and artisans sell original set models, sketches, and miniatures to fans. The Exchange announced a pause as the community grieves.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues remembered her generosity and humor as much as her talent. \u201cSomething that starts off in my head with a few little scribbles on a paper ends up being fleshed out in steel, lights and fabric and it\u2019s up there on stage,\u201d she told http:\/\/Broadway.com in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Louizos is survived by her longtime partner Robyn Goodman, her brother Nikolas Louizos, her mother Dianna Louizos, and her sister Desi Woltman.
