Dolly Parton Dies: Iconic \u201cJolene\u201d Singer-Songwriter, \u20189 to 5\u2019 Star and 11-Time Grammy Winner Was 80<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dolly Parton, the legendary singer-songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist whose unmistakable voice and deeply personal songs made her one of the most beloved figures in American entertainment, has died. She was 80.<\/p>\n

Parton died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, August 25, according to an announcement published on her official website<\/a>. Her representatives said she died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center following a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones, according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A private funeral service will be held for immediate family members. The family has asked that, instead of sending flowers, fans make donations to Dolly Parton\u2019s Imagination Library.<\/p>\n

Parton\u2019s death brings to an end an extraordinary career that spanned seven decades and crossed the boundaries of country music, pop, film, television, theatre, business and charitable work.<\/p>\n

From Tennessee Poverty to International Stardom<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee. She was one of 12 children raised by Robert Lee Parton Sr. and Avie Lee Owens Parton in a small home in the Smoky Mountains.<\/p>\n

Her family had little money, but Parton frequently spoke about the music, faith and storytelling that surrounded her during childhood. Those early experiences later inspired some of her most personal compositions, including \u201cCoat of Many Colors,\u201d which turned a childhood memory into one of country music\u2019s most enduring songs.<\/p>\n

Parton began singing in church and performing on local radio and television while still a child. The day after graduating from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville to pursue a professional music career.<\/p>\n

Her breakthrough came after she joined The Porter Wagoner Show<\/em> in 1967. Her partnership with Porter Wagoner introduced her to a national audience, and the two became one of country music\u2019s most successful duos.<\/p>\n

Despite that success, Parton wanted to establish herself as an independent artist. Her eventual departure from Wagoner\u2019s show inspired \u201cI Will Always Love You,\u201d a farewell song that became one of her signature compositions.<\/p>\n

The Songs That Defined Generations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Parton wrote thousands of songs during her lifetime, often drawing on heartbreak, poverty, family life, faith and the experiences of working-class women.<\/p>\n

\u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d reached No. 1 on the country chart in two different decades through Parton\u2019s own recordings. Whitney Houston later transformed the song into a worldwide pop phenomenon with her rendition for the 1992 film The Bodyguard<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Parton also found enormous success through collaborations. Her duet with Kenny Rogers, \u201cIslands in the Stream,\u201d topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983 and became another defining recording of her career.<\/p>\n

She earned 11 Grammy Awards from 54 nominations and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She also achieved 25 No. 1 singles on Billboard\u2019s Hot Country Songs chart and released dozens of Top 10 country albums, according to the Recording Academy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She initially hesitated to accept the latter honour because she did not consider herself a rock artist, but later embraced the recognition and released the star-filled rock album Rockstar<\/em> in 2023.<\/p>\n

Success on the Big Screen<\/strong><\/p>\n

Parton\u2019s appeal extended far beyond music. She made her major film debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 workplace comedy 9 to 5<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The film became a major commercial success, while Parton\u2019s title song turned into an anthem for working women. \u201c9 to 5\u201d topped multiple charts and earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.<\/p>\n

She went on to appear in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas<\/em>, Rhinestone<\/em>, Steel Magnolias<\/em> and Straight Talk<\/em>. Her warmth, comic timing and natural screen presence made her a popular actress even among audiences unfamiliar with her country recordings.<\/p>\n

Her portrayal of Truvy Jones, the lively beauty-shop owner in Steel Magnolias<\/em>, became one of her most memorable performances.<\/p>\n

Parton often used humour to deflect attention from her business instincts, but she maintained control of her songs and intellectual property at a time when many performers\u2014particularly women\u2014were encouraged to surrender ownership.<\/p>\n

A Legacy of Literacy and Generosity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond her entertainment career, Parton was admired for her charitable work.<\/p>\n

She founded Dolly Parton\u2019s Imagination Library in 1995 in honour of her father, who could not read or write. The programme mails free, age-appropriate books to children from birth until the age of five, regardless of their family\u2019s income.<\/p>\n

Beginning in her home county, the initiative expanded across the United States and into Canada, Britain, Australia and Ireland. By the end of 2025, it had distributed more than 304 million books, according to the Imagination Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Parton also supported disaster-relief programmes, education, wildlife conservation and medical research. In 2020, she donated $1 million to research that contributed to the development of Moderna\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n

Her husband, Carl Dean, died in March 2025 at the age of 82. The famously private couple had been married for nearly 60 years. Despite Parton\u2019s global fame, Dean largely avoided public appearances and remained outside the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n
