Phyllida Law Dies: Prolific Film and TV Actor, Mother of Emma and Sophie Thompson, Was 94<\/strong><\/p>\n

Phyllida Law, the distinguished Scottish actress whose career encompassed more than six decades of work in theatre, television and film, has died at the age of 94.<\/p>\n

Law died peacefully at her home on July 27, 2026, surrounded by members of her family. Her longtime manager, Jacky Leggo, subsequently confirmed the news of her death.<\/p>\n

Best known for performances in productions including The Winter Guest<\/em>, Much Ado About Nothing<\/em>, Emma<\/em>, The Time Machine<\/em> and Saving Grace<\/em>, Law was also the mother of celebrated British actors Emma Thompson and Sophie Thompson.<\/p>\n

A Peaceful Death Surrounded by Family<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement announcing Law\u2019s death, her manager said the actress died \u201csupremely peacefully\u201d at home with her family beside her.<\/p>\n

The announcement prompted tributes from across the British entertainment industry, with admirers remembering Law as a warm, versatile and quietly commanding performer. Although her daughters became internationally recognised stars, Law established an extensive and respected career of her own.<\/p>\n

Her professional life stretched from the theatre of the 1950s to her final film appearance in the 2020 romantic comedy Then Came You<\/em>. People<\/a> reported that her death occurred several weeks before it was publicly announced.<\/p>\n

From Stage Design to Acting<\/strong><\/p>\n

Phyllida Ann Law was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1932. She initially planned to become a stage designer and enrolled at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School with that ambition.<\/p>\n

Her direction changed after she discovered a love for performing. What began as an unexpected move into acting developed into a remarkably long career across nearly every major area of British entertainment.<\/p>\n

Law began appearing professionally during the 1950s. Her early television credits included well-known British programmes such as Dixon of Dock Green<\/em> and Dr Finlay\u2019s Casebook<\/em>. She steadily became a familiar presence on television while continuing to build an impressive theatrical r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n

A Distinguished Stage Career<\/strong><\/p>\n

Law joined the original London cast of the musical La Cage aux Folles<\/em> at the London Palladium in 1986, playing Jacqueline. Her stage work demonstrated the range that would define her career: she could move comfortably between comedy, family drama, literary adaptations and emotionally demanding material.<\/p>\n

Law\u2019s film career gained greater public attention during the 1990s. She played Vera in Kenneth Branagh\u2019s 1992 ensemble comedy-drama Peter\u2019s Friends<\/em>, appearing alongside Emma Thompson, Branagh, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Imelda Staunton.<\/p>\n

One of Law\u2019s most memorable performances came in the 1997 film The Winter Guest<\/em>. Directed by Alan Rickman, the drama starred Law and Emma Thompson as an estranged mother and daughter dealing with grief and their complicated relationship.<\/p>\n

Law portrayed Elspeth, while Thompson played her widowed daughter, Frances. Their real-life connection brought additional emotional depth to the intimate story.<\/p>\n

The performance earned Law considerable critical praise and helped establish The Winter Guest<\/em> as one of the most important films of her career. The project also represented one of several occasions on which members of the Thompson family shared the screen.<\/p>\n

Her final television appearance came in a 2013 episode of the BBC crime drama New Tricks<\/em>, according to Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Marriage to Eric Thompson<\/strong><\/p>\n

Law met actor and writer Eric Thompson while training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. They married in 1957 and had two daughters, Emma and Sophie.<\/p>\n

Eric Thompson was widely remembered as the narrator and writer of the English-language version of the children\u2019s television series The Magic Roundabout<\/em>. The couple remained married until his death in 1982.<\/p>\n

Both of their daughters followed their parents into acting. Emma Thompson became an internationally acclaimed actor and screenwriter, winning Academy Awards for Howards End<\/em> and Sense and Sensibility<\/em>. Sophie Thompson established her own extensive career in theatre, television and film.<\/p>\n

Law was also the grandmother of four, including actor Gaia Wise, Emma Thompson\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n

Author and Advocate<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to acting, Law wrote candidly about family life, ageing and caring for older relatives. Her books included Notes to My Mother-in-Law<\/em> and How Many Camels Are There in Holland?: Dementia, Ma and Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The latter explored her experience of caring for her mother during her struggle with dementia, approaching an emotionally difficult subject with honesty and characteristic humour.<\/p>\n

Law also published the memoir Dead Now Of Course<\/em>, reflecting on her early theatrical career and the personalities she encountered along the way.<\/p>\n

Honoured for Her Contribution to Drama<\/strong><\/p>\n

Law received honorary degrees from Glasgow Caledonian University and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in recognition of her accomplishments.<\/p>\n

In 2014, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, for her services to drama and charity. The honour recognised not only the longevity of her career but also her substantial contribution to British cultural life.<\/p>\n

An Enduring Family and Artistic Legacy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Phyllida Law leaves behind a body of work remarkable for its breadth and consistency. She moved effortlessly among theatre, television and cinema, working with generations of leading performers while maintaining a distinctive presence of her own.<\/p>\n

Her collaborations with Emma and Sophie Thompson gave audiences a rare opportunity to see the family\u2019s genuine closeness translated onto the screen. Nevertheless, Law\u2019s career extended far beyond her role as the mother of two famous daughters.<\/p>\n
