A sixth-grade class is doing some spelling drills. The teacher asks Tommy if he can spell the word \u201cbefore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tommy confidently stands up and says, \u201cBefore, B-E-P-H-O-R.\u201d<\/p>\n
The teacher pauses, then shakes her head. \u201cNo, Tommy, that\u2019s wrong. Can anyone else spell \u2018before\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n
Another little boy stands up and says, \u201cBefore, B-E-F-O-O-R.\u201d<\/p>\n
Again, the teacher shakes her head. \u201cNo, that\u2019s wrong.\u201d She looks around the classroom and then asks, \u201cLittle Johnny, can you spell \u2018before\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n
Little Johnny immediately stands up and says, \u201cBefore, B-E-F-O-R-E.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cExcellent, Johnny!\u201d the teacher says with a smile. \u201cNow can you use it in a sentence?\u201d<\/p>\n
The whole class waits, curious to see whether Johnny can actually use the word correctly.<\/p>\n

A cowboy, fresh from Texas, strolls into a bar in Montana and orders three mugs of Bud.<\/p>\n
He heads to a corner and takes a sip from each mug, one after the other, in turn. Once he\u2019s finished, he returns to the bar and orders three more. Curious, the bartender approaches him and says, \u201cYou know, beer goes flat pretty quickly after it\u2019s poured. It might taste better if you just ordered one at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The cowboy smiles and explains, \u201cWell, here\u2019s the thing. I\u2019ve got two brothers\u2014one in Arizona and the other in Colorado. When we all moved away from Texas, we promised that whenever we drank, we\u2019d each have one for the others, just like we did back home.\u201d<\/p>\n
He raises his mug slightly and adds, \u201cSo, I\u2019m drinking for my brothers and myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
The bartender nods, impressed by the sentiment, and leaves it at that. From then on, the cowboy becomes a regular at the bar, and everyone gets used to his unusual ritual. Every time he comes in, he orders three beers and sips them in rotation, one for himself and one for each of his brothers.<\/p>\n
Months pass, and the tradition never changes.<\/p>\n
Then, one evening, the cowboy walks through the door and quietly takes his usual seat.<\/p>\n
The regulars glance over.<\/p>\n
The bartender looks up.<\/p>\n
Instead of ordering three beers, the cowboy simply says, \u201cTwo mugs, please.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room suddenly becomes quiet.<\/p>\n
The regulars exchange worried looks. Everyone remembers his story about his two brothers. The bartender hesitates, then slowly brings over the two beers.<\/p>\n
When the cowboy returns to the bar for his second round, the bartender cautiously leans in and says, \u201cI\u2019m sorry for your loss. I just wanted to offer my condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n
The cowboy looks confused for a second.<\/p>\n
Then he suddenly bursts out laughing.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh no, no one\u2019s passed away!\u201d he chuckles. \u201cIt\u2019s just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church, so I had to quit drinking. But my brothers are still going strong!\u201d<\/p>\n
The bartender stares at him for a moment before realizing what just happened.<\/p>\n
The regulars erupt in laughter.<\/p>\n
The cowboy raises his glass and grins.<\/p>\n
\u201cI may have given up drinking,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I never said my brothers had to!\u201d<\/p>\n
