When Eric showed up to our first date with roses and a monogrammed keychain with my initials, I honestly thought I’d hit the jackpot. He looked like the kind of guy people described as “a real gentleman.” He was charming, attentive, and even pulled my chair out for me before I sat down. He remembered small details I had mentioned in passing, smiled often, and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me.

We met through mutual friends — Mia (my best friend) and Chris (his roommate) — so I felt pretty confident going in. If someone I trusted knew him, how bad could he really be? At least, that was what I thought.

He insisted on paying for everything, smiling confidently as he said, “A man pays on the first date.” I thanked him, slightly impressed by his old-fashioned manners. The conversation was decent, and while there weren’t fireworks, there was a comfortable feeling between us. He seemed sweet, respectful, and surprisingly thoughtful.

That night, I went to bed feeling hopeful.

Finally, a decent guy? Maybe?

The next morning, I woke up to a text.

I expected something simple and cute, something like: “Had a great time last night. I’d love to see you again.”

Instead, I got something that made me sit straight up in bed.

An invoice.

No, seriously.

An actual itemized invoice titled: **“Date Night – Amount Due.”**

At first, I thought it had to be some strange joke. Maybe he was trying to be funny. Maybe there was some clever punchline coming. But as I kept reading, my confusion slowly turned into disbelief.

Here’s what it said:

Bouquet of Roses – 1 hug I stared at my phone, waiting for the moment where he would reveal he was kidding.

But there was more.

At the bottom, written in bold letters, was the part that made my jaw drop:

“Failure to comply may result in collection — via Chris.”

Yes. That Chris.

Our mutual friend. The person who had vouched for him and told me Eric was “one of the good ones.”

For a few seconds, I genuinely wondered if I was being pranked. Maybe Mia and Chris knew about it. Maybe this was some bizarre social experiment. But something about the confidence behind the message made my stomach sink.

I immediately screenshotted the invoice and sent it to Mia with one question:

“Is this real?”

Her response came almost instantly.

“What am I looking at?”

I explained everything, and within minutes, she called Chris. He was just as shocked as we were. He told her he had no idea Eric planned anything like that and that he was embarrassed his roommate had acted so strangely.

But then Chris did something I didn’t expect.

Instead of just apologizing, he decided Eric needed a taste of his own ridiculousness.

Within an hour, Chris sent Eric a “revenge invoice” that was even more absurd and ten times funnier.

The title?

“Consequences for Pretending to Be a Gentleman – Amount Due.”

The charges included:

**Sitting at the Same Table as Her – Public apology** For the first time in the entire situation, I laughed.

It was ridiculous, but it was also satisfying knowing that someone else saw how strange Eric’s behavior was.

Unfortunately, Eric did not find it funny.

Not even a little.

Within minutes, my phone started lighting up with messages from him.

“You don’t get my sense of humor.”

“You missed out on a great guy.”

“At least I’m honest about my expectations.”

Then came a few longer messages explaining how he was “just testing my personality” and that I “failed the test.”

I didn’t respond.

There was no point arguing with someone who believed kindness was something that could be billed later.

I simply sent one final thumbs-up emoji and blocked his number.

A few days later, Mia told me Chris had confronted Eric about the whole thing. Apparently, Eric still insisted he was being “playful” and couldn’t understand why everyone thought it was weird. That somehow made the situation even stranger — because he wasn’t embarrassed by the invoice. He was only upset that nobody appreciated it.

And the monogrammed keychain?

I kept it.

It now hangs on my corkboard as a trophy from the strangest date I’ve ever experienced. Every time I look at it, I remember that sometimes the biggest red flags don’t show up immediately.

Sometimes they arrive the next morning.

With an invoice attached.

Moral of the story? If someone insists on paying the bill, make sure they aren’t secretly expecting a romantic payment plan in return.

When Eric showed up to our first date with roses and a monogrammed keychain with my initials, I honestly thought I’d hit the jackpot.
