\nAfter losing my wife, my family stopped visiting me altogether, but the neighborhood children became my comfort with their frequent visits. Once I got tired of being neglected by my own family, I decided to make them see the error of their ways.<\/p>\n
Seventy-eight years on this earth, and I\u2019ve learned a few things about people. I know how they\u2019ll hug you close when you\u2019re useful, then forget you when you\u2019re not. But I suppose, after years of sitting alone in this old house, you either grow bitter about it or figure out a way to laugh. I decided to laugh and maybe teach a little lesson while I was at it.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d been mostly alone since Ellie, my dear wife, passed away 17 years ago. I can still remember the quiet in the house after the funeral, a silence that filled every corner, pressing on my ears like cotton.<\/p>\n
I thought, surely, family would fill some of that emptiness. After all, we\u2019d raised three kids together, watched our six grandkids grow up, and even welcomed two great-grandkids. Surely, I thought, they\u2019d be around. But a man can only hope\u2026
\nBut hope and reality don\u2019t always shake hands. Months turned to years, and besides the occasional holiday card or awkward phone call, my family all but disappeared. I\u2019d watch out the window, see the neighbors out with their kids, and hear the laughter that belonged to everyone else but me.<\/p>\n
And then, like a gift from somewhere up high, the neighborhood kids started coming around! Ben, Sasha, Emma, and a handful of other kids would peek through my gate, and eventually, they\u2019d trickle in, one by one!
\nAt first, it was just a curious visit, then another, and before I knew it, they were spending whole afternoons with me! They\u2019d bring cookies they\u2019d baked (or tried to bake), ask for stories about when I was their age, and share secrets they\u2019d never dare tell their parents!<\/p>\n
They were noisy, messy, and my joy! On my last birthday, I had ten kids and their parents crammed around my little table, the former singing off-key and eating too much cake! It was the best birthday I\u2019d had in years!<\/p>\n
One chilly afternoon, Ben looked up at me with his big brown eyes and asked, \u201cMr. Stewart, where\u2019s your family? Do they come to visit you?\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled, patted his little shoulder, and said, \u201cThey\u2019re busy kiddo. Everyone\u2019s busy these days.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s sad that they can\u2019t make time to come hang out with a kind old man like yourself who always has a big smile on his face.\u201d<\/p>\n
That night, alone with my thoughts, the truth felt heavier than usual.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d been a good father and a decent enough grandfather, but time had made me just another name on a holiday card, a number in the family tree. And that\u2019s when the idea struck me.<\/p>\n
If they wouldn\u2019t come for birthdays or holidays, well, maybe they\u2019d come if they thought they\u2019d missed their last chance!<\/p>\n

The morning of the \u201cfuneral,\u201d I dressed in my best suit, straightened my tie, and headed over to the cemetery with the kids, who were practically bouncing with excitement.<\/p>\n

The sight of them brought back memories of summers at the lake, Christmas mornings, and the way they\u2019d pile into the house, filling it with noise and love. But those were memories from another life\u2026<\/p>\n
As they got closer, my family looked at each other, confusion on their faces. Finally, when everyone was there, the neighborhood children and I rounded the corner, and my family finally saw me\u2026 very much alive, very much smiling.<\/p>\n
The expressions on their faces were priceless! Some stared, mouths open, while others glanced around as if hoping this was some mistake.<\/p>\n
Diane was the first to speak. \u201cDad? What\u2026 what is this?\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat and leaned back in my chair, hands folded, trying not to laugh. \u201cSurprised to see me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah!\u201d Jack exclaimed, letting out a stunned laugh. \u201cYou\u2019re supposed to be\u2026 I mean, we thought you were\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDead?\u201d I finished for him, smiling warmly as I started my speech. \u201cWell, not quite. But I wanted to see how quickly you\u2019d all show up if you thought you\u2019d missed your chance.\u201d<\/p>\n
They all looked at each other, uneasy, and the weight of their silence hung in the air. I decided to break it before they grew too uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, I know life gets busy. Jobs, families, hobbies\u2026 it\u2019s a lot. I understand that. But it\u2019s been seventeen years, kids. Seventeen years with hardly a visit, hardly a word.\u201d<\/p>\n
My voice softened. \u201cI\u2019ve been alone for a long time. And if it weren\u2019t for these kids here,\u201d I gestured to Ben, Emma, and the others, \u201cI\u2019d have spent my last years in an empty house, waiting for you to show up!\u201d<\/p>\n
I could see the guilt settling in on their faces, and I felt a little sorry for them, but not enough to back down. This was a lesson they needed to learn. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my trusty old calculator.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow,\u201d I said, holding it up, \u201csince you all came for the inheritance announcement, let\u2019s get to it. I\u2019ll be dividing what I have based on how much time each of you spent with me in my last few years.\u201d<\/p>\n
The calculator clicked on, and I tapped a few buttons for effect, relishing the tension.<\/p>\n
They stared, wide-eyed, as I started calling out amounts. Cousin Amy, who\u2019d never visited once in the last five years, got nothing! My daughter and sons each got nothing too, causing everyone to gasp in shock!<\/p>\n
Then I turned to the kids. Ben, Sasha, Emma, and the rest watched me, innocent and clueless about the whole thing. \u201cBen,\u201d I said, grinning at him, \u201cfor all those afternoons you spent listening to this old man\u2019s stories, you\u2019re getting $90,000.\u201d<\/p>\n
His mouth dropped open, and the rest of the kids gasped, unable to believe their ears.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you serious, Mr. Stewart? That sounds like a lot of money,\u201d he whispered, eyes wide.<\/p>\n
\u201cDead serious,\u201d I replied, feeling a swell of pride. \u201cEvery one of you kids gets a portion of what\u2019s left, from $30,000 to $90,000. You earned it!\u201d<\/p>\n
My family looked around, astonished, as they watched these neighborhood kids light up with joy and disbelief. Diane let out a small, sad laugh.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t believe it,\u201d she said, more to herself than to me.<\/p>\n
I turned to Anna, my youngest granddaughter, and pulled out a small, framed photo of her sitting on my lap when she was little, laughing like she didn\u2019t have a care in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you, sweetheart,\u201d I said gently, handing her the frame, \u201cyou get this. It\u2019s worth more than money. This is the best gift you ever gave me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now grown, she took the photo, tears brimming in her eyes as she ran her fingers over the glass. The rest of the family watched, a little teary themselves, realizing what I was trying to say.<\/p>\n
Finally, I took a long look at all of them.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet this be a lesson, kids. Family isn\u2019t just about the blood you share. It\u2019s about the moments you make together, the love you give, the time you spend. Don\u2019t wait until it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jack stepped forward, putting a hand on my shoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re sorry, Grandpa. We really are. We\u2019ve been\u2026 well, we\u2019ve been lousy.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded, patting his hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know you are, son. And I forgive you. Life\u2019s too short to hold grudges.\u201d I glanced over at the neighborhood kids, who were still buzzing with excitement. \u201cAnd you lot, you\u2019ve made this old man\u2019s last years the happiest they could be! Thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n
With that, we all gathered around, and for the first time in years, I felt like I had my family back, both old and new! And as I looked around at their faces, I knew this lesson would stick.<\/p>\n
