So, I had a Zoom interview last week for a job I really wanted. I was nervous, dressed professionally (at least from the waist up), and made sure everything looked clean behind me. I even kicked my cat out of the room because he\u2019s a chaos gremlin whenever I need peace. Before the call started, I double-checked my camera, tested my microphone, and took a deep breath. Everything was finally under control\u2014or so I thought.<\/p>\n
Five minutes in, things are going okay. I\u2019m talking about my experience, trying to sound like a normal, functioning adult, when I hear a bang. Then a crash.<\/p>\n
Then silence. The kind of silence that makes your stomach drop because you know something very bad just happened. For a second, I\u2019m hoping it\u2019s in another room and won\u2019t affect me. I keep talking, trying to stay focused, but I can already feel disaster creeping closer.<\/p>\n
Before I can react, my cat pushes the door open like he pays rent, leaps onto my desk, knocks over my water, steps in it, walks across my keyboard (muting me in the process), and finally sits directly in front of the camera like some kind of judgmental lion. Not content with that, he stares straight into the lens as if he\u2019s the one conducting the interview and has serious concerns about my qualifications.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m flailing, trying to grab him while saying, \u201cSorry, sorry! One sec!\u201d but of course, I\u2019m muted, so I just look like I\u2019m aggressively miming. My cat, meanwhile, decides this is the perfect moment to clean himself. I can see the interviewer watching the whole disaster unfold, and I\u2019m convinced my chances of getting the job are evaporating in real time. Then I notice something unexpected.<\/p>\n
The interviewer starts laughing.<\/p>\n
Not a polite little chuckle\u2014a genuine laugh. That somehow makes me even more nervous because now I have no idea whether this is going terribly or strangely well.<\/p>\n
I finally grab the fur demon, unmute myself, and apologize again, fully expecting to spend the rest of the interview recovering from the embarrassment. Instead, she smiles and says, \u201cHonestly, that was the most entertaining interview I\u2019ve had all week.\u201d<\/p>\n
The rest of the conversation went surprisingly smoothly, but I still couldn\u2019t stop thinking about the incident. After the call ended, I replayed every second in my head, convinced that no company would hire someone whose interview had been hijacked by a wet-pawed cat with no respect for professional boundaries.<\/p>\n
Fast forward a few days, and I got the job.<\/p>\n
Apparently, they liked that I stayed calm under pressure, adapted quickly, and managed to keep my sense of humor even when everything went completely off the rails. One of the interviewers even mentioned that the whole situation felt authentic and showed how I handled unexpected problems without panicking.<\/p>\n
