And by \u201cbefore,\u201d I don\u2019t mean a week before, or even a day before. I mean thirty minutes before I was supposed to walk down the aisle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ryan and I met two years ago, completely by chance. I\u2019d gone to a small community theatre to support my friend Mila, who was making her debut as a director. After the show, I stood outside holding a bouquet of flowers when Ryan, swept along with the exiting crowd, bumped straight into me\u2014crushing the flowers in the process.<\/p>\n

He apologized, helped pick them up, and struck up a conversation. \u201cI hate crowds,\u201d I muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe too,\u201d he chuckled. \u201cI\u2019m Ryan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHanna,\u201d I said, and just like that, something clicked.<\/p>\n

Three months later, he proposed in the most casual, yet perfect way\u2014in a pub, over Guinness and crispy potato skins. It was spontaneous, unpolished, but it was us.<\/p>\n

From then on, everything seemed picture-perfect. My family adored him. \u201cHe makes her happy\u2014that\u2019s all a father could want,\u201d my dad said one evening over dinner. Ryan\u2019s parents, especially his mother Audrey, welcomed me too. She and I even fell into a comfortable routine of coffee dates and manicures. I truly believed I was gaining not just a husband, but a second family.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to our wedding day. A small church ceremony, intimate and carefully planned to reflect who we were as a couple. I was calm, excited, ready\u2014until Audrey asked to speak with me.<\/p>\n

The tone of her voice and the way her eyes darted nervously around the room made my stomach drop. Once my hair and makeup were finished and my mother buttoned me into my dress, I faced her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no easy way to say this,\u201d she whispered, pulling out her phone.<\/p>\n

My heart thundered as she handed it to me. On the screen was a video. Ryan, or someone who looked like him, in a hotel room with another woman. Jackets tossed on the bed. Low voices. Kisses. Betrayal caught on camera.<\/p>\n

I froze. \u201cAre you sure this is him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Audrey pressed, pointing to the jacket I had bought him. The hotel room looked vaguely familiar too. She sighed as though she pitied me.
\u201cYou can overlook it, dear, but can you live with it?\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted to scream. To cry. Instead, I made a choice. \u201cNo. I\u2019ll walk down that aisle\u2014but when it\u2019s time for the vows, I\u2019ll end it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly what I did.<\/p>\n

When the priest asked for my vows, I whispered, \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d Then, louder: \u201cI don\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence was suffocating. Guests gasped. Ryan\u2019s face contorted with shock. \u201cWhat? Hanna? Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAsk your mom,\u201d I said, pointing at Audrey. Reluctantly, she showed the video to the entire church.<\/p>\n

Ryan staggered back. \u201cThat is not me, Hanna! You know it\u2019s not!\u201d<\/p>\n

But I couldn\u2019t. The jacket, the hotel\u2014it all screamed guilt. I fled the church, my parents rushing after me. That night, I blocked Ryan\u2019s number, convinced I had just saved myself from marrying a liar.<\/p>\n

Two days later, Ryan showed up at my parents\u2019 house with flowers and takeout. Against my better judgment, I let him in. That\u2019s when he told me the truth\u2014truth that was somehow even more disturbing than the video itself.<\/p>\n

He had confronted Audrey, who admitted everything. The people in the video weren\u2019t Ryan and another woman. They were two of her college students, bribed to stage the scene. She had gone so far as to edit in sounds and even plant Ryan\u2019s jacket to make it believable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked, reeling.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t want us to marry,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cShe panicked. She thinks you\u2019re\u2026 not right for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach churned. The woman who had smiled at me over lattes, who called me the daughter she never had, had set me up\u2014coldly, deliberately\u2014just to stop me from marrying her son.<\/p>\n

I forgave Ryan. How could I not? He had been as blindsided as I was. But Audrey? That\u2019s another story. Her betrayal cut deeper than any imagined affair could have.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re still together, though scarred by what happened. Trust takes time to rebuild, and the shadow of that day still lingers. Audrey has tried to reach out, but I don\u2019t know if I can ever forgive her.<\/p>\n

Because what she did wasn\u2019t just sabotage. It was cruelty dressed as protection.<\/p>\n
