Gordon S. Wood, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian widely regarded as one of the foremost scholars of the American Revolution, has died at the age of 92 after being struck by a vehicle in Rhode Island. According to authorities, Wood suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car in a supermarket parking lot in East Providence on Sunday and later died at a local hospital. Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.<\/p>\n

For more than five decades, Wood shaped the study of early American history through his influential scholarship on the nation’s founding era. A professor emeritus at Brown University, he was celebrated for his meticulous research and compelling interpretations of the American Revolution and the creation of the United States.<\/p>\n

Wood received the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for History for his landmark book The Radicalism of the American Revolution<\/em>, which argued that the Revolution transformed American society in ways far deeper than a mere political break from Britain. His earlier work, The Creation of the American Republic, 1776\u20131787<\/em>, won the prestigious Bancroft Prize and remains a foundational text in the field of American history.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Wood authored numerous acclaimed books, including Empire of Liberty<\/em>, Revolutionary Characters<\/em>, and The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin<\/em>. In recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship, Wood was awarded the National Humanities Medal by former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2011.
