Most people think the holiday starts when the suitcase hits the hotel room floor. In reality it begins much earlier \u2014 at the airport, where travel stories and funny moments are born between check-in desks and baggage carousels. You might mix up a suitcase, forget where you\u2019re flying, or watch a perfectly happy stranger ride a trolley through the terminal singing to himself. And somehow you find yourself smiling along, unaware that something even more unexpected is already waiting just around the next security corner.<\/p>\n

I was flying from Egypt. At the inspection, I\u2019m asked to pay an extra \u20ac50 because my flippers are sticking out of my backpack and don\u2019t fit in the carry-on luggage sizer. Seriously? \u20ac50? I look at the officer, then quietly take off my sneakers and put on the flippers. I ask, \u201cDoes it fit now?\u201d He says, \u201cYes, but you can\u2019t fly in flippers.\u201d I ask him to show me that rule. Of course, he says there\u2019s no such rule. I say, \u201cWell then, that\u2019s it!\u201d \u2014 and proudly walk into the boarding gate in flippers. I was simply traveling without checked luggage or carry-on, just a small backpack. For a second, I thought they might ask me to remove half my outfit right there under the fluorescent lights.<\/p>\n

Here it is!\u201d and walked off with my bright orange suitcase, as if nothing in the universe had just exposed me.<\/p>\n

I have free luggage checking with my status!\u201d Then I watched her call someone with a sour face to cancel the payment, while I stood there realizing I had accidentally triggered a small administrative drama.<\/p>\n
