I started suspecting my husband was having an affair. He\u2019d been distant lately, always texting late at night, and seemed to be hiding something. One evening, I followed him after work, sure he was meeting someone. My hands trembled on the steering wheel the entire drive, every red light feeling like it was stretching my anxiety further.
\nTo my surprise, he drove straight to a tiny, run-down building on the outskirts of town. I waited in the car, heart racing, imagining every worst-case scenario. When he finally emerged, he wasn\u2019t with another woman. He was carrying a large duffel bag filled with\u2026 old board games? And not just a few\u2014dozens, carefully wrapped like they were priceless treasures.

Sometimes when I\u2019m bored, I will Google bars and restaurants in other countries, look at their menu, and try to decide what I would get to eat or drink if I was there. I even imagine the atmosphere, the lighting, the sounds, as if I\u2019m already sitting at the table waiting for my order. It helps me pass the time, and who knows, maybe one day I\u2019ll be able to eat at one of these places\u2014and finally see if my imaginary choices were any good.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m on a train, bus, or tube, I find myself imagining what it would be like to be stuck with those people in a post-apocalyptic survival group. Who would be useful? Who would be a hindrance? What would my social standing in the group be? Which women would I try to flirt with?
\nSometimes I catch myself studying faces too long, as if silently assigning roles before anything has even happened. I find this works best on forms of public transport with multiple stops. It allows me to judge the stations based on who gets on and off. Has the group improved or degraded? And strangely, I start feeling relief when certain passengers leave\u2014as if the \u201cfuture\u201d has shifted slightly in my favor.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a mom nearing 50, and I really enjoy playing Fortnite. Maybe that\u2019s not so weird, but in my social circles, hardly any women play video games\u2014let alone one that\u2019s popular with kids the same age as my own. Sometimes I mute the mic quickly if I hear younger players talking, just so I don\u2019t have to explain myself. But when I\u2019m in the game, building and surviving, I forget all of that\u2014it feels like stepping into a different version of myself that no one at school pickup would ever guess.<\/p>\n

I record myself reading books aloud, like Berenstain Bears chapter books, Choose Your Own Adventure, Goosebumps, and more. I do the voices, edit out mistakes, and sometimes add music or sound effects. Then I listen to those recordings while doing household tasks or, especially, when I can\u2019t sleep. Hearing my own voice reading helps me doze off like you wouldn\u2019t believe. Sometimes I even wake up thinking I\u2019m still inside the story, as if my own narration has pulled me into a half-dream state.<\/p>\n

I build virtual houses in The Sims to post on the gallery. I think I\u2019m up to around 8,000 downloads (which isn\u2019t that much, but\u2026 yeah, I post often). Sometimes I spend hours on just one room, adjusting tiny details no one will probably notice, like whether a cup is slightly tilted or perfectly centered.
\nOn days off, when no one\u2019s around, I might post five builds in a day. I just find it super relaxing. I like to flesh everything out with little knick-knacks so it looks like real people live there. So yeah, I\u2019m an adult who plays dollhouse. What about it? And sometimes I wonder if those imaginary families in my builds would judge how much time I spend designing their lives.<\/p>\n

I used to make catalogs of people. I had some pretty bad social interaction issues, so I used it to keep track of information about them. It was like having a folder in my brain for each person. It\u2019s subconscious now, but occasionally I\u2019ll bring up something super specific, and people either think it\u2019s sweet or really weird. Sometimes I realize I\u2019ve remembered details they themselves have forgotten telling me, and I can\u2019t decide if that makes me attentive or just quietly unsettling.<\/p>\n

I design new types of pasta. It\u2019s fun to think of all the elements\u2014shape, ingredients, texture, etc.\u2014and how you can innovate upon them to create something completely new. I\u2019ve always loved sculpture, but this is even better because it\u2019s pasta, and I get to eat it. Sometimes I even imagine restaurants serving my designs, and I picture people unknowingly judging my creativity one bite at a time.<\/p>\n

I watch a lot of extraction videos on YouTube. Everyone knows about pimple extractions, but what about mango worm extractions? Ingrown toenail extractions? Earwax extractions? Rocks being removed from horse hooves? Ingrown hair extractions?
\nI just enjoy seeing things being taken out of other things. It\u2019s like, \u201cAh yes, this creature has benefitted. Good has been done here.\u201d Not even my husband knows, and I do not plan on telling him. Sometimes I even pause the videos at the most intense moments, like I\u2019m studying something forbidden but oddly satisfying.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m in a line at a grocery store or somewhere similar, I listen for the cashier\u2019s \u2019go-to\u2019 phrase. It\u2019s usually something like \u201cHave a nice day,\u201d \u201cHave a good one,\u201d or \u201cTake it easy.\u201d Most cashiers say the same thing to each person, so it\u2019s easy to pick up on.
\nAfter my transaction is over, and they\u2019re handing me my receipt, I say their phrase just a moment before they can. It gets really awkward. Sometimes they freeze mid-sentence, unsure if they\u2019ve already said it or if I\u2019ve just stolen it from the future.<\/p>\n
